Those B! banks!

Reclining golden Buddha in Thailand – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingBANKING-- despite all their assurances that you have set up all the correct procedures and accounts, there WILL be problems. Not in your host country, but 'back home'. These will take the form of excessive fees, limitations on the maximum allowed currency, changes in their regulations, both Governmental and internal bank rules, staff changes, lock-outs for internet transactions and many, many others.

Should you try snail mail it may take weeks of effort; I once took a certified bank check wih...

Wrong Attitudes and Expectations

I am married to a foreign-born man. My husband is a naturalized citizen of the United States of America. He speaks English, albeit with a bit of a Danish accent, but he does communicate well in English. We both complained about non-English speaking people. A frequent comment from myself and others was "If you are going to live in my country why do you not try to speak English?"

Fast forward to our host country of Panama. Like most of the civilized world, many...

Day Trip to Boca Chica

On a windy day in February three of us ladies drove the hour and forty-five minute scenic route to Boca Chica.  Bright as a blue umbrella the sky above us was a vivid blue. Strong winds pushed us down the narrow, two-lane road toward the Pan America Highway. it was definitely time for the A/C in the car!  We chatted and laughed all along the way. Donna was making the trip to spruce up and change out her jewelry display at the Seagull Cove Lodge gift shop....

A Simmering Healthcare Crisis for Expats

In Panama healthcare is much more affordable, over- all, than in the USA. Of this, I am fairly certain. On the other hand, there is a serious need for health care reform in the insurance industry serving Panama. Not all expats are wealthy, not all can afford the high deductibles, and up to $2,000 plus monthly premiums many insurance companies require here. Medicare would be great if it were allowed, but alas, not available, even with the more affordable costs...

From Bucket Baths and War Zones to the Cool, Beautiful Mountain Highlands of Nicaragua

Jewel Hoff in Nicaragua – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingJanuary 2014, I arrived in the early afternoon in Managua airport via United Airlines. After the huge and tedious Houston Airport, the small Nicaraguan airport was a relief.  Customs stamped my passport and I paid the $10 fee.

I had reserved a so-called “resort” online for one night in Managua, as well as the Budget car rental. (I am deliberately omitting the name of this hotel for reasons that will become clear soon.  I will say, however,...

Belize—A Life of Freedom and a Place for Everyone

Jestine Dawson as schoolchild in Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingI have been living in Belize for all of my 30 years, a descendant of many cultures.  My great-grandfather was a Scotsman who moved to Belize and married an African who became my great-grandmother.  Thus was created the blend of what I am.

I've had  opportunities to work with and for many foreigners who came to Belize, like my great-grandfather, to fulfill their dreams. With this exposure, I became interested about life in other countries and how the experiences of the...

The Cumbersome Legal System in a Nutshell

Get ready for the delays, the costs, fees and cumbersome legal system of Panama. Here you find it wise to use an attorney for all kinds of transactions. However it isn't just the attorney you deal with, it is bureaucracy mumbo-jumbo and administrators! Many are like the angry, underpaid, middle managers of other places. They have a little power, so they love to abuse it!

I interviewed a young attorney that is just starting out. The government sets the...

People Get to Know Panama thru Stories

It was in December 2012 when we came to Panama. I had been researching sites, blogs, and magazines online for about two years. It was tedious and often difficult to find the information I wanted. I managed to dig up facts, statistics, places, climate, foods, picture, language, and laws. Still it wasn't long before my heart belonged to Panama. Our lives have changed, a lot. Having things doesn't matter so much in Panama. So letting material things go was a sad thing but a...

Wonders Right On Our Doorstep!

We have just had the most amazing weekend without having to go away, pay expensive hotels or drive for hours!

Saturday we took a trip to La Laguna in Las Lajas… we have wanted to go there for ages and had heard all about this stunning lake.

It was approximately 40 minutes’ drive heading from the entrance of Las Lajas and following the road all the way into the mountains… the scenery was breathtaking! Eventually you will come to a...

Bangkok was dreadful, the "Concrete City" of choking traffic and humid heat. No thanks. Next was Chiang Mai, a smaller Bangkok. No thanks.  A friend from OZ has lived in Chiang Rai in the extreme north of the country, for 12 years so the next and last...
