Are taxis readily available in Puerto Vallarta, and what do taxis cost in Puerto Vallarta?

Using taxis is the easiest way to get around in Puerto Vallarta. The town is zoned for the taxis and the rates are available for everyone to see, so the cost is fair. You do have to know the zones because there have been reports of riders being over-billed because they didn’t know.

Taxis are readily available in Puerto Vallarta but they are really expensive. They can charge 100 pesos (US $5.50) from the airport to the center. The range for a taxi fare in Puerto Vallarta is 100 to 150 pesos ($5.50 to $8.20). There are taxi lanes on the highway so even if you don’t call one, you could just wait for a taxi to come by and hail it from the street.

Taxis in Puerto Vallarta do not have meters. So before you get on the taxi, you should negotiate first with the driver how much you’re going to pay and it differs depending on where you are going, and especially if you are going somewhere far because they might charge you too much. If the charge is not okay with you, you could pass and wait for another taxi to come by. They could charge up to 800 pesos ($44) from the airport to Sayulita, which is an hour’s drive. Or they can strike a deal with you and charge 150 pesos ($5.50) to take you from the airport and bring you back once your vacation is over.

Taxis are everywhere in Puerto Vallarta. I would occasionally use taxis when I'm getting my car fixed or when going to the airport or bus station. Puerto Vallarta is not a big town so you don't have large distances to travel. From one end of the town to the other, the cab ride costs 200 pesos (about US $11). The typical cab ride around town is about 100 pesos (about $6).

People look forward to haggle or negotiate prices when they come to Mexico. Most of the taxis in Puerto Vallarta are straight forward with their prices. However, every once in a while, they may give you a price and you think, "Wait a minute." You can talk to them to lower the price a little bit so you could reason with them. Taxi drivers don't really make a lot of money off the tourists. What they're providing is a service.

There is a special line of taxis at the airport ready and waiting for passengers to take them wherever they need to go. There are yellow cabs everywhere in Puerto Vallarta. All you need to do is walk outside and there would be an available cab. There are special stations where you would find cabs waiting that are almost everywhere on every street.
