How's the hiking and camping in and around Cayo, Belize, including San Ignacio and Belmopan?

The hiking is good in the Cayo District because we have higher elevations here. We have mountains and it's cooler. If you go to the mountains, we have the ruins as well that you could go and climb. There are also some campgrounds around. You can even camp in the mountain Pine Ridge area, which is cooler as well. There are caves and different activities to do around this area. For hikers and campers, this is the area you would want to be.

What you call hiking and what I call hiking might be different. Some people might go to the ruins and say "I hiked up to the top today." The locals in Cayo do not go backpacking, for example, on hikes that take several days, except for the locals who go hunting. Most of the locals think, “Why would I go camping when I live here?”

Hiking and camping is not very popular in Cayo but it can be easily done if you really want to. San Ignacio’s surrounding villages and nature reserves would be a good place for hiking and camping because we have a hilly terrain and mountains with perfect campsites and places that are good for sightseeing. I highly recommend the Mountain Pine Ridge area for hiking and camping because they have a number of streams, rivers, and waterfalls. They also have camping areas that are monitored and kept by Belize Defense Forces. Right now, we have an influx of BATSUB (British Army Training and Support Unit Belize) soldiers from Britain.
I have personally gone camping here in Cayo with school groups and I was part of the scout group in our area in San Ignacio. We used to go on different camping trips. I remember going to a sinkhole once with my scout group. There was a sinkhole behind the Santa Familia Village, which is not very popular but I know many people who traveled to Belize and went hiking or horseback riding here. It is a huge sinkhole that is several feet deep. It’s very cool because we have a hilly terrain and it is overlooking the valleys around it.
