The best way to get around in Belize would depend on where in Belize you are. If you have a car you can get around the whole country. A car is a good thing to have. If you want to go to the jaguar reserve and you’re in Placencia, where I live, you can just drive for 45 minutes and there you are. If you want to go to the Maya ruins, you just have to drive an hour and a half from Placencia.

The answer to the best way to get around in Belize is different depending on whether you are visiting in Belize or living there.
As a tourist you may be on more of a tight schedule than you would be if you are living in Belize and enjoying "Belize time."

The answer to the best way to get around in Belize is different depending on whether you are visiting in Belize or living there.

Tourists can rent vehicles for traveling around the mainland, but depending on your circumstances, it might make more sense to hire a taxi or shuttle service, or even catch a flight 
on one of the local airlines. If you are traveling to one of the cayes, you will either fly or take a boat. Some of the cayes have a strict policy on allowing any more passenger vehicles at this time. But unless you are operating a business, there is really no need for one. Even some of the local businesses are able to conduct business using only golf carts. As a tourist you will make use of a golf cart or possibly even walk to where you need to go. If you have lots of time to spend getting from place to place, you may want to take a boat/ferry on some occasions. These are less expensive, but do require a little more time.

Buses are also available and very inexpensive, but usually crowded and make many stops before reaching your destination. If living on one of the cayes - again - the golf cart. Depending on where you live in Belize and what your day-to-day needs are, you may live close enough to walk to markets, small stores, etc. Many things can be delivered in Belize also, which saves you from traveling. The people that I know who have moved to Belize from another country have lost weight and become healthier. Some of that can be attributed to the walking they find themselves doing now. Sometimes guest ask us if they should take the water taxi to San Pedro (on the island of Ambergris Caye) from Belize City instead of flying. The answer I give them is: To get from BZE International Airport to the Water Taxi Terminal, you have to take a 25 minute cab ride through Belize City. This costs $35 USD or ($17.50 divided by 2 ppl sharing). The Water Taxi is $17.50 USD and is a 1.5 hour boat ride to San Pedro. So each will spend $35 for 2.5 hours of travel time. Then if you take a One-Way direct flight back to BZE when you return home, its $85 USD one-way. Total of $120 Round-trip (one-way water taxi and one way flight). Or, you can just fly round-trip 15 minutes each way for $145 USD. I think its worth the $25 more per person to fly both ways direct from BZE terminal!
There are also daily flights from BZE International Airport or Muncipal Airport in Belize City to Placencia, Dangriga and Punta Gorda at 7:45am, 10:45am, 12:45pm, 2:45pm and 4:45pm. Flight cost varies depending on where you stop.
Flights head West from BZE to Belmopan and San Ignacio at 11:45am, 2:45pm and 4:45pm.

On Ambergris Caye the best way to get around is on a golf cart. This is the main mode of transportation on Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye- although more people are bringing cars on the islands, which is not necessarily well received by everyone.

The best way to get around in Belize is by having a private vehicle because you would be traveling in your own time. You don’t have to wait for a bus or a taxi. Buses come around every hour and a half. It is not like in other countries where you will find a bus the very minute you arrive at the terminal. If you have a private vehicle, you can go to wherever you want and park right in front of the place where you are going.
If you don’t have a private vehicle, there are vehicles that you can rent here in Belize. But for me, owning a private vehicle would be the best way to get around in Belize.

This really adds to the friendly and social atmosphere that Belize and Ambergris Caye are known for. Luckily, the island is extremely accessible for those that aren't interested in renting a car or golf cart. If you want to more exploring, flights from Belize City to Ambergris Caye are only 10-20 minutes in duration and boats or water ferries can get you from Ambergris Caye to the famous Hol Chan Marine Reserve or Caye Caulker relatively cheaply.
