What’s the dress code in Belize? What clothes do they wear in Belize?

With the tropical weather in Belize, casual attire is always in style!
I don't recall ever seeing a man in a suit or jacket, although I'm sure there may be some occasion for that within the professional sector. Occasionally you will see someone such as an attorney or office manager in a dress shirt and tie or a dress and heels, but typically even office workers have more casual clothes that work well in the heat.

As a tourist or expat living in Belize, you will live in shorts, t-shirts, tank tops and maybe even swimsuits!
If you are on one of the cayes, it's very likely that many of the restaurants have sand floors and no A/C. There's really no need, as the ocean breeze is almost always blowing to keep you cool. I always advise my tour guests to only bring casual, comfortable clothes and leave their dress clothes back at home. But just beware - if you stay in Belize for more than a couple of weeks, you start reaching for a jacket when the temperature goes down in the 60's!

Going out to restaurants, you may want to wear a nice dress shirt. I cannot think of any scenario where I needed to wear more than shorts and a shirt anywhere. Women definitely like to wear tight fitting clothes. That’s a good thing for men.
Typical expats would wear shorts and a t-shirt. Men can also wear shorts and no shirt. If you go into the bar in Corozal where expats go, you walk in there and the guys are wearing tank tops, shorts, flip flops or sandals. The women wear tank tops and shorts or bikinis and shorts. We have high humidity and heat so if you wear anything other than that, you’re sweating.
If you want to dress up in Belize, you can. I think dressing up in Belize means you put on shoes and a shirt. When I went out to the clubs, there were people dressed up very nicely. Women wore dresses and some men wore right buttoned up shirts. For me, it was a personal choice not to dress up in Belize. It’s just too hot, no matter what. I’m comfortable wearing T-shirts and shorts.
No matter what you’re wearing, I don’t think Belizeans will look at you funny unless you are wearing a big safari hat.

Generally, the island of Ambergris Caye is very laid back and it is very common to see people wearing flip flops, shorts, and sandals. I am probably dressier than other people, but overall, the dress code here in Belize is very casual.
However, when there is an event, Belizeans like to "dress to impress," so don’t show up to a party in flip flops and shorts.

Belize is a hot place all year round and even though you’re dreaming of sunny winters, you might be underestimating what a warm winter and sun all year round are like. We recommend that you bring cool clothing; light colors, cotton, short pants, sleeveless shirts, flip flops, etc. We’d also recommend you bring a wind-breaker, especially if you’re visiting the islands, since it can get a little windy.

The only time you might need a light sweater would be if you’re spending time in the mountains during cool months. When we say "cool months" we think 65 F is cold! You'll see most Belizeans pull out their sweaters then, while visitors walk around in shorts.
PS: Don’t forget your hat and sun block and the fact that "No shoes, no shirt, no problem," is a common saying here.

There are establishments in which you would dress up in a formal way just like there are casual establishments all across the world. If you want to go to the nicest restaurants in town they’re not going to bat an eye if you’re rather casual but the general vibe of it is going to be people that are dressed up. You will see people who are tucking in their shirts, combing their hair, ditching the flip-flops and wearing dress shoes. There’s not necessarily a strict dress code by any means and that is true for most of the region.
One thing that seems incongruent is that men in Belize do not just walk around with their shirt off. Going out in public without a shirt in Belize is considered an impolite thing to do. But in general, there’s not a lot of strict dress codes. If you’re going to the bank, wear something nice but they are not going to care if you don’t. The dress code in Belize just depends on what makes you feel good as a person and what you are comfortable wearing.
