How's the Internet in Belize?

The Internet in Belize is a little bit overprized and not as stable as most places in North America. When the weather is bad in Belize, perhaps with hard rains and thunder, the Internet can go off very often, but when the weather is nice, the Internet is stable. The reliability and stability of the Internet here in Belize depends on the weather. If it is windy, the Internet might slow down; it will not go down completely.

Internet connectivity in Belize is pretty poor. In the last three weeks, The Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) told us that the entire country of Belize was hacked. BTL provides phone, landline, and Internet for a majority of the country. The Internet in Belize has been mostly offline for about two weeks now. We all subscribed to this government-based company, which provides our phones and our Internet and they are just horrible for what you pay for and what you get. We barely had Internet for three weeks. It just has been massive undertaking, resetting all the DNS servers for all of our computers and they changed it again and again. They can't really get a handle on what happened and why it happened, but they charge us even though we haven't had any Internet during this time. What service can you not provide and demand full payment and a tax on top of it, other than a government-run monopoly?
There is another provider in Belize that is recently getting a lot of attention because it is backed by Claro and Claro provides telecom services to most of Central America. I think it is a Mexican based company and it is huge.
In addition, people are migrating to Smart, but they do not really have the same kind of service. I have a fiber optic line in my house through BTL that broadcasts through a little box, but what you get if you will migrate to Smart is “MyFi,” which is like a thick credit card that provides your signal for you. So there is an alternative to BTL but it is not the same size and magnitude as BTL. With these latest problems in Belize in the last few weeks, I would highly expect that people will be running to Smart and because they are tired of BTL. BTL will not answer our calls and they charge us an arm and a leg.

We have good Internet in Belize. Sometimes, there are interruptions, but most of the time, it is good. The interruptions do not happen very often but when they do have interruptions, it could be for a long periods or a couple of hours so you are down without any Internet. In a month, you might not have any interruptions on the Internet connection and there are times when it is down for a couple of hours. It varies. Internet service is not very often out, though.

The Internet speed here in Belize City is at par with the Internet speeds in the US. I am not sure how fast the Internet speed is in other areas of Belize. I have never heard anybody complain about the Internet speed anywhere.
The Internet speed is okay and in fact, we work on the Internet. Without it, we could not work.

The Internet is improving in Placencia. It is not good Internet but it is better compared to 10 years ago when I first went there. It improves every year.
The internet in Placencia is not like the Internet in the United States or Canada. We have our own Internet in our facility. We have routers on all the condos and each individual home. People in our projects can get their own Internet from the companies in Placencia.

A lot of the Internet setup here in Belize are radio so it is wireless from point to point. Sometimes the power goes out in certain places where we don’t know and that makes the Internet connection go down. However, the Internet connection here in Belize is getting better and we are getting more and more connected. It is pretty much the same throughout the country because everything is wireless. Even San Pedro (on Ambergris Caye) and Caye Caulker also struggle with reliable Internet.
There are a few different companies that offer Internet service here. We pay around US $50 a month for internet service here. We get unlimited usage with around 5 megabytes of speed when it is working well. Ambergris Caye is trying to run cables under the sea so they can have Fiber Optic Internet but it hasn’t been completed yet.
