How good are the medical centers, hospitals and health clinics in Volcan and Cerro Punta, Chiriqui Province, Panama, and how close are they?

How good are the medical centers, hospitals, and clinics in the Volcán and Cerro Punta region of Panamá? There are three hospitals in the provincial capital of Davíd (four if you count the maternity hospital), all excellent. A new regional hospital will be opening in Volcán in just a few weeks, which is welcome news, such that, in an emergency, one does not need to travel to Davíd, which is about an hour away by auto.

There are several clinics in the area, and the doctors are universally very good.

Two doctors in the area are also acupuncturists.
There is also a first-class herbal clinic in Volcán. For about $5 they give you a thorough examination with a metal rod. As I discuss in my published book about life in the Tierras Altas, I told the herbalists absolutely nothing about my medical history - yet they told me, after the examination, my history with astonishingly exact detail. They then prescribed herbs to help me - herbs that you can find for free in the byways and fields, or buy at the clinic for another dollar or two. A mark of their excellence is that Native Americans, who are traditionally knowledgeable about herbal medicine (as I discuss in another of my books), and gringos, who are not going to drive sometimes quite a long way and pay money unless they are getting good quality, both come in large numbers to this clinic.
