I love to have the opportunity to answer this question. I have seen so many mistakes done regarding our dress code here in Panama. So let us begin.

Panama is a very humid, hot weather country for sure but even though our weather invites everybody to wear just shorts and slippers, it is completely different here. Panama follows the fashions of New York and Paris, especially those of the Spring / Summer Season. In Panama we have stores from all over the world to get those pieces.
We will use a suit dress or suit pants for the office and cocktail dresses and long gowns for brides and graduation parties. If you are invited to an event be sure to see the dress code in the invitation card if you do not want to feel odd and dressed differently from everyone else. Yes, many of the newcomers are retirees here in Panama City, but that does not mean that you have to retire your dresses, suits and ties. Be sure you are going to use them here if you want to be part of our society.
ENJOY YOUR STAY IN PANAMA CITY....

Latin American ladies (and Panamanians are not an exception) like to follow a dress code for every event they go to, even if it is a daily trip to the supermarket. And this code works for men, as well.
Outside, in the street, you see "blue collar" general citizens well dressed, but not necessarily expensively, because one of the good things about Panama is that you can get casual clothing, shoes and accessories at ridiculously low...

Outside, in the street, you see "blue collar" general citizens well dressed, but not necessarily expensively, because one of the good things about Panama is that you can get casual clothing, shoes and accessories at ridiculously low prices everywhere in the stores and malls.
On the other hand, if you prefer brand names, hundreds of the latest fashion stores and malls are offered through out the city.
Panamanians are very conscientious of fashion....there is the "Panamá fashion week" in which famous designers from all over the world concentrate here for a fashion show once a year.
Ladies in Panama wear long pants and formal blouses to go for a "coffee", dinner or a movie. They wear dresses for church or any other event, as well as nice pants suits. Even the shorts are nice, and they wear them with very nice shoes or sandals, never "flip flops" or anything sloppy.
Most foreigners usually wear shorts, or simple dresses, sneakers and hats. Lately, Panamanians are starting to wear shorts to go to the malls.
For formal events, there is a competition in fashion. All weddings are formal, and the dresses worn are expensive.

People in the San Francisco area of Panama City mostly dress business casual during the week, because San Francisco is a business area.
In addition, you will see a lot of people wearing sports clothing, usually in the mornings or late in the afternoon, because that is when they go to the gym, or the parks, or just simply walk around the area. You will not see people wearing flip-flops or beach clothing in San Francisco.
