Living in San Francisco, Panama City, Panama, for the last 6 years has been a rewarding experience. If you check out my life story (My Life in Panama So Far) you'll find out how my wife selected this neighborhood. At the time, I was living in Miami FL and I trusted in her judgment. (I still do!). Technically speaking, San Francisco is a wide metropolitan area, which even includes Punta Pacifica where Trump Ocean Club is located and Punta Paitilla, an urban jungle of high-rises. On the other hand, if you trust the English version of Wikipedia (at the time of this writing), San Francisco would be a district in the remote province of Veraguas... Actually, you might very well argue that San Francisco is the heart of the city! It is literally close to everything: the highway (Corredor Sur) that leads to the Tocumen International Airport and the new suburb Costa del Este, not to mention the best shopping malls in town (Multiplaza, for example), the best hospital (Hospital Punta Pacifica, associated with Baltimore's Johns Hopkins), the best supermarkets, the best restaurants, places of worship, etc... all in an eminently residential, quiet and secure area. A few years back, many houses were razed to make room for tall residential skyscrapers, but those projects have thankfully been halted to preserve the residential aspect of San Francisco. Generally, apartments are much more affordable than those in Punta Pacifica, Costa del Este or Balboa Avenue. I live within walking distance of Panama's best park: Parque Omar, named after late General Omar Torrijos, which used to be a golf course. If you own a dog, this is the perfect place to walk him, day or night, if you like to walk or run, or simply enjoy nature in a safe and quiet environment, then seek no more: Parque Omar is the local version of New York's Central Park.

Construction in Panamá is very solid and because this country is blessed with a beautiful weather all year round, you can enjoy outside terraces and balconies all day long. With no threat of hurricanes or tornadoes, the ideal daily program is to enjoy outside walks or any activity that includes beautiful sunshine, even though sometimes it rains, especially from May through November. But even this season is very enjoyable as everything is green and comfortable and fresh.
And if you just want a walk inside the mall, or go to a nearby hotel for a nice breakfast / brunch, San Francisco is an ideal place to be, as it offers so many opportunities to enjoy daily life, in individual and different ways.... just "do it your way".

Even though it’s a very relaxed neighborhood, San Francisco is more urban; right in the middle of the city. San Francisco has a lot of apartment buildings, but it does have houses. In San Francisco, houses are quite big, old style houses with prices over US $600,000. You can find places for less to live, but for the most part, they will be apartments. Apartments in San Francisco can be right on the water, with a beautiful view of the ocean. What you won’t see is any lower class areas.

Many people in the San Francisco area of Panama City go to the park on their free time because Parque Omar is centrally located in the area. A lot of people go running, jogging, or just simply spend the day at the park. Parque Omar has areas specially designed for children. It also has seating areas where you can just enjoy the surroundings.

San Francisco is also full of restaurants, so many people also like to eat out there. A lot of people go to watch movies at the theater in Multiplaza, too.
San Francisco is not big on nightlife, so if people want to have nightlife on weekends (for example), they go to other parts of Panama City like Marbella, Casco Viejo or the Amador Causeway, all of which are very close.

To live in the San Francisco area of Panama City is very relaxing, because you cannot hear too much of the traffic in this area. Expressed in one sentence, the answer to this question would be “San Francisco is a nice place to live”. Although San Francisco is crowded, it is still not as crowded as other parts of Panama City. And it is safe in San Francisco as there is a good police station nearby.

San Francisco is literally close to all the amenities that you need as there are bars in a five-minute radius, there are clubs in a ten minute radius, there is a hospital in a five minute radius, there are two supermarkets in a three minute radius, and you have access to the main highway in about five minutes.
If you like it green, then there is Parque Omar in the San Francisco area of Panama City. Parque Omar is the size of an 18-hole golf course, and it is getting very popular among the residents and visitors to San Francisco to go to the park. So if you like to rest your soul in a less dense part of Panama City, but still be in the middle of the city, I would say that San Francisco will be the best place to live.
