What's the crime rate against Americans and other expats in El Valle de Anton, Panama?

The crime rate against Americans in El Valle is not something to worry about. The locals assume you have money, certainly more than them, and will charge you accordingly. So, if you are a tourist, ask the price for a cab ride before you get in, negotiate in the open market to get the best deal and don't go out of your way to wear diamond rings or Rolex watches in public. Why make yourself a target?

There is no real animosity to Americans in Panama. The Panamanians are used to our presence because of the canal. Go out of your way to be nice to them and they will more than reciprocate.

I cannot deny that there are crimes committed against Americans and other expats in El Valle de Anton. If one expat has been targeted, usually a group of expats are also targeted. So if one person gets robbed in the middle of the night, the other expats should keep an eye out because they could also be targeted. There have been incidences when you’re asleep and you don’t know that there is somebody in your house, stealing stuff. You wake up the next morning and your stuff...

This can also happen to local people as well; people who don’t earn more than US $12,000 a year; not just expats. There can be a crime spree, and then it ends.
If you are living in a remote area, if you don’t have a dog, you haven’t taken precautions, nobody knows you, you don’t know them and you’re by yourself, you are in more danger than you would be otherwise. Try to get yourself into a community that you’re comfortable with, if you’re moving into a Latin American country.
