There is also a police station at the entrance of Coronado. If anything should go wrong that's where you would want to go. You wont miss it; you have to pas by the police station if you want to exit Coronado.
Personally I have left my cell phone in my car with my windows open over night at the hotel parking lot and did not get robbed. I wouldn't recommend doing that but it is an example of how crime rate in Coronado is none to slim.

At the entrance of Coronado, there are many facilities including those for safety and everyone is willing to protect each other, or help in any way. As cellular phones are so popular, if anything should happen, anyone would call the police or emergency personnel, who would be in site very rapidly.
No statistics have been offered on crime rates, but judging from what the residents say, they have a very pleasant life inside Coronado, and they are not more concerned about crime than they would be if they were living anywhere else.

Coronado, Panama is a gated community and no one can enter without proof of living there, as is true of all of Panama's many gated communities...and each condo has their own security. This is as it is in most parts of the world, and what you should look for when selecting a place to relocate short or long term.
House owners in Coronado need to provide their own security and there is a network of community alarm systems that have been implemented to deter robberies or worse. Violent crimes are very rare in Coronado but you do hear about this level of crime in outlying areas.
It is advisable to take precautions almost anywhere. Walking the beach at night alone is one of those things that you would not think is a good idea in most places... and being careless with your possessions could leave you open to theft and can be avoided with proper awareness.

The general crime rate in Coronado, Panama is low. In Coronado, friends look out for friends so if there is suspicious activity around a neighbor's property, people will contact that neighbor or report the activity to the local police. As a single woman living in the Coronado area, I feel very safe working and doing all normal living activities such as shopping, meeting friends for dinner or just taking care of regular chores.

Yes, in Coronado they do have a private gate with guards standing by, but never have they ever stopped me from rolling right inside. I did it so many times it was just crazy. You see, even though Coronado is a private place, they still have open bars and restaurants as well as a local Cable Onda building back in the day where I took my mother down once a month so she could pay her cable bill. I would pull up to the guard and say “I'm here to see Randy Wetbottom” or “Cindy Hotpants” and they would wave me right in. My mom would say one day they are going to have someone out here that will understand me and I was going to be in trouble.
Well a friend of mine asked me to come along with him to play poker with a bunch of guys down there so I went, and my friend pulled up to the gate and told the guard we were here to see Billy Boner!! I busted out laughing and my friend said “What's so funny?” I had never told him about what I do all the time and I just thought he was being funny like I always did, but as it turned out the joke was on me because that was the man's real name.
Anyway, again with places to eat and others in Coronado, you can see how they can't turn anyone away from going in there. Years ago the people down there wanted to stop everyone from going past the gates into their little world and they got the government to agree that they were private, so when the roads turned to pot holes they all cried “Come fix our roads!” and the government said “NO, IT'S YOURS AND IT'S PRIVATE.”
The expats have bought many homes in Coronado, but all that did was make the price jump. You are close to shopping though, so if you don't mind paying US $350,000 for a $125,000 home, jump right in there.
Know this as well, that all beaches here in Panama are open to the public, so what they started doing is blocking all that land behind the beach off so you couldn't get to the beach unless you walked across someone's yard and that is a “no no” here, so the government stepped in and said the people blocking off the land behind the beach must leave open alleyways so the public can get to the beach. Yeah, but then where most of those beaches in Coronado are, there is no parking, so where you have to park and leave your car you can't see it, so when you do come back is your car there or not? Humm..
Did someone say “car alarms??” Here in Panama car alarms are the songs of my people. One goes off every second of every day, so much so when one goes off no one even looks up
Now, back to the question “Is Coronado safe?” Coronado is as safe as any city in America.
Use your head, don't flash a bank roll of money, don't wear high end watches and gold, keep your head up and look around you at all times. A lot of the crimes here in Panama on us expats are from people in our inter circle: our maid, the yard or pool man, people you trust and pay well and allow into your homes and your lives.
They ALL talk about you, and they know all about you over time. You’re planning a trip back to the States for two weeks to see little Kate get that degree, who are you going to tell? The maid, the yard or pool man. “Yep, keep a eye on the place for us. We will be leaving this date and returning this date.” And trust me, a maid knows everything inside your home, even the places you don't think she knows about. Now NOT ALL, but many. But again these are the same problems you have any place in the world. Overall, Panama is a very safe place to live, and some parts more the others.
Invest in your safety and in the safety of your loved ones. Lights, dead bolt doors, window guards, maybe a large dog outside and a small dog inside. Get to know the people who live around you. I also put in a camera system that records day and night 24 7 on a month loop, so no one can walk in my yard without me knowing it. I’m not scared of anything, but I don't want to make myself a easy target. If my house has all of the above and yours doesn't, they will go to your house and by pass mine.

The crime rate is low and it is absolutely safe in Coronado, Panama. The crime rate is lower here than many other areas in Panama, which may be because Coronado is gated.
In comparison to Chicago where I lived for several years, Coronado has way less crime. Chicago was like a war zone with all the murders that happen there. Those things do not happen in Coronado. It is a safe, low crime place.

There is only one way in and one way out here in Veraguas and there is a couple of police checkpoints in between. So you could call the checkpoint and say, “Hey, this guy robbed us, I think they have a white Toyota. There are four guys.” By the time, they get there, they will be stopped and they will not leave the area. We have a nice net of security around here.

If you live in Coronado, you don’t have to be concerned with that.
If you go to Punta Barco Resort and in Punta Barco Village, you will find that it’s as safe as Coronado. Other places surrounding Coronado that are also safe, many of which have security guards, are San Carlos, Costa Esmeralda, and Rio Mar. These are all very safe places.

The crime rate is higher in some parts of Panama City than in Coronado. In Coronado, we do get some home break-ins and the police definitely need to get more attentive to that, too.

Criminals are not only picking on foreign people. They are actually picking on their own people, too. It is just a general crime when things are just not running correctly. We had a change of government here and they are just in the process of changing it at the moment. It is a transition that affects the crime rate because things are not going as smoothly. The previous president spent a significant amount of money and I think that made unemployment go up a little bit, which I think, tends to lead to maybe higher crime figures.
We own a home in Sarasota, Florida, that was broken into, but we never ever had a break in when I was there. It is probably a little worse here in Coronado for break-ins than where I came from in Sarasota. Most of the crimes are petty theft here in Coronado. If they could get ahold of your computer or your laptop, they’ve “made it” because obviously, many people are poor here. A laptop is worth a couple hundred dollars on the black market, which is a lot of money to them. In Sarasota, when my house was broken into, they cleared the whole house. Violent crimes are very rare here in Coronado. I am not concerned about violent crime here in Coronado on day-to-day basis and I have a family here.

If you leave your laptop in the front seat of your car and you leave your car unlocked, it might not be there when you get back; that kind of thing. I’ve never felt unsafe here. I’ve never had a problem. I have had petty theft happen, though. It was days ago that I did the same exact example I just gave. I left my laptop on my front seat and didn’t lock the door. When I came out of the store, my laptop wasn’t there. It was in a computer bag, so it was very easy to tell what was going on in there.
However, Coronado is safe. There are a lot of people that lived here who are single, older women, younger women and men and I believe that Coronado is a great place to live and feel safe.

As with any major urban center in the world there is some crime in Coronado, Panama. Because we are a small community we do hear about it quickly and there is always a great deal of talk about it, but the crime rate would not be different than any city in the world. We have lived here for 5 years and I have never felt "un"safe. We have two very noisy dogs and a fenced home and bars on the windows and thus far we have not had any concerns....

When we bought the house it was on the condition that my husband take down the "ugly bars" on the patio and windows - they are still there. It is more a precaution than anything else. If I am out walking I usually have the dogs and I have never had an incident with people (just other dogs).
