The population density of Coronado is low and only increases as the weekend or days off arrive. Residents are often foreigners and Panamanians in the middle to upper classes.
The surrounding neighborhoods are quiet areas. From my perspective as a young woman, Coronado in Panama is a very safe area.

I did have to laugh at some of the answers!
Coronado is about as safe as anywhere, I enjoy helping people to relocate here, but you have to remember that as an expat, you are going to be one of the people who 'has' as opposed to many people here who 'have not'.
I have heard of robberies, home invasions and muggings, but what I have not heard of is rapes and murders unlike pretty much every where else in the world!

I do have to say I feel very safe here, as an expat and as a female. I feel my child is safe here, and Panama has less crime than our nearest town back home in England!
Having said that, I recently had my handbag stolen from my car, but I have to take full responsibility for that as I left the car unlocked!
As for Coronado being a gated community which apparently makes it safer, I'm sorry, I do not agree! The main gate in Coronado is barely a check point, it allows access to public beaches, bars and restaurants so keeps no-one out. The gates to places like Coronado Golf Resort, Coronado Country Club or Coronado Bay and the Equestrian Club are a different story and do ensure that not just any one can go wandering in.
So many people come to Coronado and are then convinced into staying within those gated walls, what I tell my clients is that I did not come here to hide behind barbed wire and a high fence, I would not be put off living in other areas of Panama because I had been told 'it was not safe to be anywhere other than Coronado' In fact, I chose not to live in Coronado, I do not have a gate, or a fence or bars on my windows! I guess only time will tell if I regret those decisions, but right now I'm sticking by my decision and I will continue to promote supposedly unsafe (ungated) communities, other than Coronado, because gate or no gate, if someone wants to rob you that badly, they will find a way!

In general, Coronado is very safe. People here are not scared to walk around, go to restaurants, etc. I don’t live in Coronado but I come here every day to work. Lately, I’ve been taking the metro to Coronado from where I live, in Panama City. I go to the Nationwide Transport Terminal, where I take a bus and tell them that I’m getting off at El Nance, San Carlos. Then I go to sleep. The bus driver just comes and tells me, “Hey, we’re at your bus stop.” For me, that’s the best way to travel here because I can take a nap while I’m on the way to work. I don’t feel unsafe at all to sleep in the bus.
People from the countryside (places other than Panama City) are trustworthy. They are really very nice. They might not speak English but they are really friendly. I see a lot of foreigners living in the area who are taking the bus, too. It is so safe that you can even use public transportation without any fear. San Carlos is on the beach area and it is a 7-minute drive to Coronado. Coronado is in the Chame District and San Carlos is the next district over.
