If you really need to take a car someplace, you can take a taxi. If you are planning to go to Managua, or if you want to go to the beach, then you need a car. If you really need to take a car someplace, you can take a taxi. If you are planning to go to Managua, or if you want to go to the beach, then you need a car. If you are just on vacation then you can just rent a car for just what you want to do. If you live within the central area of Granada, you can walk to places. But if you want to go to other places such as if you want to go to the lake or if you want to go to Managua to go shopping, or to the ocean, you would need some way to get there, so for these trips, a car is recommended. An alternative is to get a car rental and ask the driver to just charge you one way since you could take a taxi to all these places if you wanted to. However, if you were going to Managua, taking a taxi or always renting a car would be a bit expensive.

Granada is only about 10 blocks around and you can see the entire city right away. If you need a ride, you can easily get a taxi and it’s only going to cost you US $1. It’s no big deal. You need a car if you want to go to Managua but you can just rent one for $45. You can use the rental car for a couple of days. Overall, you don’t need a car here in Granada if you’re only staying here for short term. If you’re planning to stay here on a long-term basis, you can easily transport yourself via car from your home to your work or to your business, or to visit other places like San Juan Del Sur or just explore the country of Nicaragua. It is more practical and easier to have a car here if you’re living here because unfortunately, the public transportation here would not help you when you have plans because there will be delays. If you have a plan, you’re working, or you’re representing a company, you need to move faster and depending on public transportation is not the best way to do that. You cannot count on the public transportation if you want to stick to your schedule. It’s not like New York where you know that the subway train will arrive at exactly 5:10 and you can count on it. Here in Granada, if you want things to move faster and if you want things to move continuously, you definitely need a car. You don’t need one if you’re only on vacation and you’re just taking things easy.

There are also the "coches de caballos"...

Do you need a car in Granada? Most say no. But here is a question: do you plan to travel around Nicaragua and do you like to depend on others - i.e., taxi or others to take you around.
We own a car and a motorcycle since we have an active real estate business. Nevertheless, I would still own a car or at least a motorbike to allow me to drive around when I need something or meet up with friends, or go out for a meal. I certainly don't like to depend...

I certainly don't like to depend on others. If you own a car there are costs involved such as insurance and maintenance, but if you use the taxi service in and around town you will survive and save money.
On a side note: If you are retired you can also purchase a car tax and duty free so that's a great savings, assuming you applied for the pensionado program.
