Are there volcanoes in Nicaragua? Are any active?
Mike Cobb - ECI Development
There are lots of volcanoes in Nicaragua, 19 to be precise. Of those, eight are active, and some of them are great for hiking and exploring. One of them, Telica has a once a month full moon hike to the top where you can see the lava and a sunrise. Cerro Negro is a cinder cone famous for the bicycle land speed record set in 2002 by the Frenchman Eric Barone. Today you can slide down on a sled of sorts and try to set your own speed record. I hit 68 km / hr. before flipping over and tumbling a while in the ash and gravel. 3rd fastest that day.

You can see a volcano very close because we have a lot of access to the volcanoes here. You can go to the top and see lava.

People here in Nicaragua used to these volcanic eruptions. I am not afraid of anything here. We even live pretty close to one of the volcanoes. It doesn’t really affect me except that it is nice to look at in the morning. It is nice to see the ash cloud that goes up from the volcano. A lot of people go out in order to see the eruption because you can actually see the lava coming out of the volcano.
Unfortunately, I haven’t done that because I have a younger child and I know that sulfur is not really good for them. But if you want to go, you can get really close to the volcano. I have been to the volcanoes multiple times. I have done cave explorations under the volcano. We have ridden our bikes there. We have done trail runs. It is pretty normal even if you see the lava coming out. It is just the sulfur that gets a little crazy but it doesn’t affect us because the wind blows towards the south so they are the ones that get affected by the sulfur. The paint on the buildings in the south do not stay on so the buildings there are all gray. The vegetation used to be really bad out there, too because of the acid rain but now it is getting green. Nature heals itself.

In the last couple of years, the volcanoes are more active than they were in the past. Some of the volcanoes are in Masaya, close to the capital city of Managua, about half an hour away by car. The volcano is called Volcano Santiago. Recently, this volcano has been showing a lot of volcanic activity so that if you go to the tourist park, you will see lava flowing from the crater or the volcano.
Another volcano that has shown recent volcanic activity is located in Leon. The volcano is called Mombacho and it has been doing some noises and movement that has caused some small earthquakes in the area. Though the tremors are not that strong it was recorded around a magnitude 5 on the Richter Scale. The eruption happened in Leon but the tremors were felt even in the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua.
Overall, there are lots of volcanoes in Nicaragua but the one in Masaya and the one in Leon that I have mentioned are the most active. Although it may sound dangerous, it hasn’t affected the people here in Nicaragua and instead of scaring people away, even more people come here to see the volcanoes because they are like tourist attractions. These volcanoes are close to the cities of Masaya and Leon but they are still a ways from the cities so if something happens, they will not affect any of those cities. They might be close to the little towns and those little towns might be affected if the volcanoes erupt, but at the moment, we are not worried about it.
