Rivers in Nicaragua are so important that some of them are used as geographic limits, transportation routes, irrigation, and more. Here are some examples: the Río San Juan borders Costa Rica; the Río Coco- the longest river of Central America-borders Honduras; the Río Escondido is a major transportation route; the Río Grande de Matagalpa is the main river system of Nicaragua; the Río Malacatoya is used for rice plantations on the Pacific, etc.
There are two lakes in Nicaragua, the Cocibolca and the Xolotlán Lake. The Cocibolca Lake is the second largest freshwater lake in Latin America; besides, it is the only lake that has freshwater sharks. Additionally, it was a main transportation route for miners and coffee buyers coming from Nicaragua to California, US, hundreds of years ago. The Xolotlán Lake, also known as "Lake of Managua" is the second largest lake of Nicaragua. On its south shore is located the capital of the country. Unfortunately, this lake has been contaminated; nevertheless, the process for cleaning it started a few years ago.
Besides rivers and lakes, Nicaragua has many waterfalls and lagoons, Some waterfalls are San Ramón, Salto de Estanzuela, and Wabule; some lagoons are Apoyo, El Tigre, Tiscapa, and Xiloa; all of these are accessible by road and beautiful.
