Are there hurricanes in Nicaragua?
Mike Cobb - ECI Development
There has only been one hurricane in Nicaragua that I know of. It hit the north east coast about 5 years ago. Other than that, no.

There are hurricanes in Nicaragua, just like the rest of Central America and the Caribbean. We usually have a series of hurricanes during the rainy season, which is around September through November. We have tropical storms and hurricanes around that season.

Hurricanes usually strike in the Caribbean side of the country. We live in Managua, which is the Pacific coast, so there isn’t much any incidence of hurricanes here; just a lot of rains for a couple of days.
Nicaragua has a coast on the Caribbean side and on the Pacific side. All of the hurricanes come from the Caribbean side because there aren’t hurricanes on the Pacific at our latitude. The major cities of Nicaragua are Managua, San Juan del Sur, Granada and Leon and all of the major expat places and all of the major population places in Nicaragua, for that matter, are all in the Pacific side. All of these are located a pretty good distance from the Caribbean, so for a hurricane to affect the areas where the expats are likely to be, which is on the Pacific side, it has to cross over the whole country. Therefore, by the time it gets to any of these areas I mentioned, its not going to be very dangerous, and it wouldn’t have much of an impact; just the rain. This is a lot different than a hurricane, where things are destroyed.

- Hurricane Beta on October 30, 2005, came ashore near the remote town of Sandy Bay Sirpi, 200 miles northeast of Managua, the capital, as...
