Are there earthquakes in Nicaragua?
Mike Cobb - ECI Development
Nicaragua is on the rim of fire the same as the west coast of the North America. Earthquakes can happen at any time. The last major quake was 1972. As long as your home or condo is built according to the appropriate engineering standards, you can feel as safe as you would in California. Having an independent engineer or set of eyes on the construction site is critically important to ensure you get a home or condo built to spec.

Yes, there are lots of earthquakes in Nicaragua but it is not a big deal to me because I am from California so I am literally immune to these tremors. I have grown up with earthquakes my whole life so I don’t get freaked out or start panicking. However, there are people here in Nicaragua who freak out during earthquakes and they run out to the streets.

Around March 2015, we had 15 days of consecutive earthquakes and the government shut down everything and they were highly concerned for their citizens, which was ridiculous and some people were even asking for the government to allow their kids to go back to school already. A lot of people just wanted to move on from those earthquakes.

Yes, there are earthquakes in Nicaragua, but generally, they are small ones. In the last couple of years there has been a lot of volcanic activity around Managua and some other cities in Nicaragua. There have been some small earthquakes as well. Just recently, there was a small earthquake in Leon, too. However, the earthquakes that we usually have do not have a huge effect on people and even on buildings, because they are weak earthquakes.
But of course,...

But of course, the buildings here in Nicaragua have emergency exits, which is something that is approved by SINAPRED, which is a mix of different government organizations that are deal with problems on natural disasters. If you have a business, you have to have your plan approved and it should have emergency exits in order for you get a license to start your business.
In general, the earthquakes that we experience here in Nicaragua are so weak that they do not have any effect. Also, earthquakes usually happen at night. I do not know why, but they don’t usually happen when people are out working. We haven’t experienced any kind of panic due to earthquakes at least in the last couple of years. When we have an emergency anywhere in the country of Nicaragua, SINAPRED works together with others so they can act as fast as possible to prevent and major problems.
