Mike Cobb - ECI Development
There are three main shopping malls in Managua as well as strip malls and “mercados.” Gallarias is the newest and nicest. Metrocentro is also nice and the mall at the old inter has discount stores primarily. All three have food courts and movie theaters.

There are three principal malls in the city of Managua: Plaza Inter, Metrocentro and Galerías Santo Domingo. In all three you can find different stores according to your needs, as well as movie theaters, food courts, banks, ATMs, and restaurants.

Plaza Inter is located in the Managua vieja (old Managua), which used to be the city center before the earthquake of 1972. In front of the mall is the Crowne Plaza Hotel. At this shopping center you can find products with an accessible price and a supermarket.
Metrocentro is located in the new city center of Managua, in front of the Hotel Intercontinental. It has more of a variety of stores that sell international brands. The food court also offers more food options and the cinema is more comfortable. This mall also has a supermarket, libraries, coffee shops and two banks.
Galerias Santo Domingo is the newest shopping center in Managua. It is located at the beginning of the Masaya Highway. It has practically the same facilities as Metrocentro, however in Galerias you can have a nice time in the Zona Viva area where many restaurants and bars can be found.
Besides malls, in all the country you can find the mercados (popularr markets). These markets are rustic, the ‘stores’ are not exactly in an infrastructure and are not located in order. For this reason, the prices are lower. The best known markets in Managua are: Mercado Oriental, Mercado Huembes, Mercado Mayoreo and Mercado Israel Lewittes.
Outside the capital, in the department of Estelí (northern zone of the country) can be found a new mall.

There are many shopping malls in Managua.
Managua has the biggest malls where you'll find everything you need.
If you want to watch a movie, there are cinemas in the malls, too.

There are shopping malls in Nicaragua, but they are not very big shopping malls like the ones in the US. You will only find big malls in Managua. In Managua, we have four big malls, which have movie theaters, and restaurants. Then in other places like in Granada, or San Juan Del Sur, there are small stores where you can go and find things that you might like. They have supermarkets, but you will not find any movie theaters there.

If you lived in San Juan Del Sur and Granada and you wanted to go to a big mall, you have to come to Managua. Managua from San Juan Del Sur is 2 hours and from Granada it is 45 minutes.
Malls in Nicaragua are different from the malls in the US because they are without air-conditioning, but when you walk it is an open mall. The only air-conditioning that you will find is in the stores. Normally, malls here have one or two floors. It is not like in the US where you find malls with three or four floors. There is a food court and the cinemas, which are similar to the malls in the US, but the stores are not as many as the stores you will find in an American mall. If you need anything, however, you will still find it here.
We also have the same brands. You might not find the very famous brands, but you will find the more common brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Polo, Nike, Benetton, Zara, etc.

Yes, there’s Galleria Metrocentro. Galleria Metrocentro has huge, giant movie theaters with VIP sections and marble floors, so you’re not going to feel like you’re in Nicaragua. You’ll find all the high-end clothing, leather, and purse stores in Galleria Metrocentro that you would see anywhere else in the world.

The Galleria is nicer – it’s bigger, roomier, and it has some incredible floors and stores. You’re probably going to pay a little bit more for the merchandise in the Galleria Metrocentro because of import taxes on some of the foreign items, but it’s a really nice shopping mall.
