On the Atlantic Coast, the sounds to dance to are the Palo de Mayo (during the festival in May) and Garífuna (from the Afro-Caribean community). It is a very tropical kind of music.
Nowadays, even the young artists in Nicaragua are playing electronic music with the traditional sound and rhythms of our songs, and people love to dance to it.

Normally, women wear very big skirts. They hold their skirts with two hands on each side and they swing their hands while dancing so that the ends of the big skirts flow and cross each other. It is very similar to the Panamanian dance.
All of the folk dances of Central America are very similar to each other because of the culture. The only difference is the type of dress each country wears and the music changes a bit.

Mostly, the dance in northern Nicaragua are some nice discotheques. In Chinandega, we can go out, have a nice dinner, and then right next door connected with the same disco is a place where you can dance. They’ll mix it up, and one of the discotheques with the formal salsa and merengue dance will be upstairs, and the younger kind of discotheque / hip-hop music will be downstairs. There are plenty of areas to go out and dance in in northern Nicaragua, and plenty of opportunities...

Where we are, in the Azul Nicaragua Development (about a kilometer from the beach) up north, there’s a restaurant called Pasta La Vista that has salsa night every Thursday night, and all the surf camps go there. It’s a really fun evening every Thursday. They bring in three or four dance instructors from Chinandega who will lead group dancing and help people learn to dance.
