How much does it cost for a gardener in Nicaragua?
Mike Cobb - ECI Development
A gardener in Nicaragua is $100 per month for full time. In many cases your gardener is also your caretaker.
We share a gardener with one of our neighbors, and the benefits are great. For one, since plants grow so quickly, we require constant yard / shrub care and the homes are beautifully landscaped. Plus, we’ve taught our gardener to change the oil in the car, maintain the blower / weed trimmers, and other small jobs around the house.

Caretakers inside the city maintain vigilance on the home, accept deliveries, do small repairs and paint touch up.

A gardener in Nicaragua costs about 400 to 500 Cordobas (around US $15) per day for when they come once a month.
Most gardeners can finish the job in one day, unless you have a very large property. Most gardeners like to work early in the morning before the sun gets too hot and they work for about 2 or 3 hours. They will do everything from trimming the trees, watering the plants, trimming the grass, etc. within 3 hours.

Sometimes, there will be two gardeners, but you still pay them $15 for the day, total.

The cost to get a gardener in Nicaragua is around US $150 a month, if you want them working full time for you or you can hire them just for the day and it is around $10 to $12 per day. If they work for the month, they would work Monday through Friday and half day of Saturday.

Here in Nicaragua, you don’t have a gardener that comes to your house once a week or whenever it would be because the labor here is very inexpensive. You can have a person that works for you that cuts your lawn, drives you around, does handy work around the house, paints, etc. for about US $10 a day. That is for an 8-hour, 5-day work schedule. He comes to your house in the morning and leaves at around 4 or 5 PM. He could typically handle all those functions at that price.

This price is actually above minimum wage standards here in Nicaragua. $10 a day is a fair wage for someone who will perform all those functions. You can give them less or pay more.

The minimum wage in Nicaragua is generally around US $230 a month. So if you were, for example, to hire a full-time gardener, or a different full-time household employee, you would have to pay that amount or more, if your employee works 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, even though you have the option to make him work on Saturdays because the actual work week is 44 ½ hours.

If the task is not full time, and it’s very small and very simple, then it’s very important to speak openly with the person that you’re going to hire, because if what you need is less than full time, the price you pay could be $8 to $10 a day depending on what you’re going to have them do. Generally, in this case, you wouldn’t need to pay for social security for hiring them. But if you were to employ them more than that, they’re going to be regularly going to your house working for you, well then, it would be very important for you to do a contract so that the person understands why and what they’re going to be doing for you. Also, if for any reason that person maybe doesn’t end on good terms with you, the contract that you signed with them is a protection for you as their employer, whether it was part-time or full-time.

The cost to get a gardener in Nicaragua varies depending on how big the area the gardener will tend, for example, whether it will be just a patio or an extensive piece of land in the backyard.
The price could also depend on your agreement with the gardener. Some people would be happy to work for US $5 a day. Others, who are more professional, wouldn’t take less than $10 a day and could even go up to $20 a day depending on how much work is involved. ...

You would pay the same amount pretty much everywhere in Nicaragua.

If you hire a gardener full time (6 days a week) in Nicaragua, you would spend around US $200 to $250 per month.
Having a gardener full time is probably not necessary unless you have a giant house with a big spread. If you hire a gardener to work a couple of times a week, it would cost you around $50 a month. The gardener would spend an hour or two at your home, and trim and water the plants.

Getting a gardener in Nicaragua is very cheap. A gardener could come to your house twice a month to tend to your garden for 300 Córdobas, which would be around US $15 per visit.

Full time gardeners in Nicaragua charge anywhere from US $80 - $200 a month. The gardeners can live with you or come daily; it’s up to you. For stay-in employees in Nicaragua, the husband is generally in charge of security and gardening, while the wife is the maid and the cook. Both gardener and housekeeper will charge about $200 each and live in a little nice caretaker home in the back of the home.

One of our rental homes in Nicaragua has caretakers living there with their two young kids and it works out really well. These caretaker homes have a kitchen and everything they may need. The gardeners provide their own food.
If you want a gardener to come in for just four hours once a week, they will charge under $10 a week The gardeners in Nicaragua do a good job, and they are hardworking. The gardeners work under the hot sun, and I think they really enjoy it and like to make your garden look good. It’s good to have the gardeners around.
These rates are for the whole country of Nicaragua, but it gets cheaper as we get up to northern Nicaragua. The tourism boom hasn’t quite hit northern Nicaragua yet, so investors haven’t come in yet. The labor prices have not gone up yet. Gardeners would charge about $5 a week in northern Nicaragua.
