We share a gardener with one of our neighbors, and the benefits are great. For one, since plants grow so quickly, we require constant yard / shrub care and the homes are beautifully landscaped. Plus, we’ve taught our gardener to change the oil in the car, maintain the blower / weed trimmers, and other small jobs around the house.

Caretakers inside the city maintain vigilance on the home, accept deliveries, do small repairs and paint touch up.

Here in Nicaragua, you don’t have a gardener that comes to your house once a week or whenever it would be because the labor here is very inexpensive. You can have a person that works for you that cuts your lawn, drives you around, does handy work around the house, paints, etc. for about US $10 a day. That is for an 8-hour, 5-day work schedule. He comes to your house in the morning and leaves at around 4 or 5 PM. He could typically handle all those functions at that price. Here in Nicaragua, you don’t have a gardener that comes to your house once a week or whenever it would be because the labor here is very inexpensive. This price is actually above minimum wage standards here in Nicaragua. $10 a day is a fair wage for someone who will perform all those functions. You can give them less or pay more.

Generally, in this case, you wouldn’t need to pay for social security for hiring them. But if you were to employ them more than that, they’re going to be regularly going to your house working for you, well then, it would be very important for you to do a contract so that the person understands why and what they’re going to be doing for you. Also, if for any reason that person maybe doesn’t end on good terms with you, the contract that you signed with them is a protection for you as their employer, whether it was part-time or full-time.

One of our rental homes in Nicaragua has caretakers living there with their two young kids and it works out really well. These caretaker homes have a kitchen and everything they may need. The gardeners provide their own food.
If you want a gardener to come in for just four hours once a week, they will charge under $10 a week The gardeners in Nicaragua do a good job, and they are hardworking. The gardeners work under the hot sun, and I think they really enjoy it and like to make your garden look good. It’s good to have the gardeners around.
These rates are for the whole country of Nicaragua, but it gets cheaper as we get up to northern Nicaragua. The tourism boom hasn’t quite hit northern Nicaragua yet, so investors haven’t come in yet. The labor prices have not gone up yet. Gardeners would charge about $5 a week in northern Nicaragua.
