How are the restaurants in San Miguel de Allende?

San Miguel de Allende is known as the gourmet place of Mexico. People from all over Mexico come here for the food and we have all kinds of different foods.

 

For example, we have a lot of different Mexican-style foods. You can also have Italian food, French-Canadian food, Argentinean, etc. I also know a really good Thai place. San Miguel de Allende is known as the gourmet place of Mexico. People from all over Mexico come here for the food and we have all kinds of different foods.

 

For example, we have a lot of different Mexican-style foods. You can also have Italian food, French-Canadian food, Argentinean, etc. I also know a really good Thai place. You can get sushi here as well. Then there are some organic restaurants. If you want a New York or a Montreal deli, that would be my restaurant. I have the sandwiches that go with the other things I make like “the Ultimate Montreal Rabbi Club Sandwich.” It’s a club sandwich with onions, mushrooms in a reduced sauce, with tons of bacon on top of it, and cheese.

 

In San Miguel you can go to a Chinese-Mexican buffet and pay 70 pesos (around US $4) for a full meal or you can go to a restaurant and pay 85 pesos ($5) for an appetizer. You get that variety that you can play with.

 

I have eaten at the Chinese-Mexican buffet a couple of times. It’s a good deal. The 70 pesos ($4) that you pay for the full meal comes with a Coke! But the clients are not coming to the Chinese-Mexican buffet; they’re coming to my restaurant. The average cost for a meal at my restaurant is about 200 pesos ($11). A filet mignon in a reduced sauce with asparagus and puree potatoes is 255 pesos ($14).

 

You can get a pizza here in San Miguel for as low as 80 pesos and you can get another kind of pizza for 200 pesos ($11). They are the same size but with different toppings and different quality. 

 

Most people now agree that I make the best pizza in town. I have been voted by the critics as one of the most elegant restaurants and with the best-tasting foods. In our first month, we had a little over 400 people come to our restaurant.

The restaurants here in San Miguel de Allende are excellent. We have a wide variety of food and we have price levels for all types of budgets. You could go to a taqueria (taco restaurant with informal seating) and get two tacos and a soda pop for $60 pesos (US $3.25). I like to go to the taqueria once every few months.

The next level would be a restaurant with formal dining, where a waiter comes to serve you. These are normally family-run or locally-owned restaurants in the medium price range.

 

We have good Thai, Spanish (tapas), seafood, Mexican, and fusion restaurants in San Miguel. Prices at a medium-range restaurants would run $120 to $160 pesos a plate (US $6.50 to $8.50). Wine by the glass is $80 - $120 pesos (US $4.25 to $6.50). 

 

We also have several international chefs that live and work here. Prices at the Rosewood Hotel restaurant, a renowned international hotel, run around US $50 a plate. Now, if you were in the States, you would probably pay double for what you could get for the $50 plate at the Rosewood Hotel here in San Miguel.

 

Where one chooses to eat has to do with comfort & pleasure. Not every expat would be comfortable eating at the taqueria.  For US $10 you can eat very well in San Miguel.

We love to eat out, and we have our favorite places that are very reasonable. For a hundred pesos or $10 US, you can experience fine dining at a nice restaurant and find a delicious meal. You...

San Miguel de Allende is known for its restaurants. There is always a new restaurant opening. There’s a restaurant to meet every pocket.  You can eat on the streets for pennies, or if you’re a millionaire, there’s also a place where you can go.

 

We love to eat out, and we have our favorite places that are very reasonable. For a hundred pesos or $10 US, you can experience fine dining at a nice restaurant and find a delicious meal. You can eat very, very cheaply. If you want to go upscale, you can spend more money, but that’s about the average- between $10-$15. 

 

There is a huge variety of Mexican food in the restaurants in San Miguel de Allende. There’s also an Indian restaurant, there are lots of Italian restaurants, and they even have the Long Horn if you’re into eating steaks. I’m a vegetarian so I tend to eat in places that offer that menu, but there’s everything and it’s mostly all good.

 

I’ve only traveled in Asia and Latin America. I’ve never been to Europe.  I tend to travel in touristy kinds of places mostly, so they tend to cater to tourists. Depending on where you go, of course, there are lots of places that offer what San Miguel offers, but there may be a lot more that don’t. I think San Miguel is kind of exceptional on that.

The restaurants in San Miguel de Allende are good. In the last 10-15 years, there have been so many options of not just good Mexican cuisine. It’s not LA, Las Vegas or New York, but there’s definitely good food to be had and classy restaurants with good service in San Miguel de Allende. 

 

In comparison to San Miguel de Allende, Pátzcuaro, the other town that we go to up in the mountains on a lake, doesn’t have anywhere to eat....

The restaurants in San Miguel de Allende are good. In the last 10-15 years, there have been so many options of not just good Mexican cuisine. It’s not LA, Las Vegas or New York, but there’s definitely good food to be had and classy restaurants with good service in San Miguel de Allende. 

 

In comparison to San Miguel de Allende, Pátzcuaro, the other town that we go to up in the mountains on a lake, doesn’t have anywhere to eat. That’s definitely something that’s lacking on our trips to Pátzcuaro- good restaurants. There are plenty of fine Mexican food places, but I like that there’s a broader spectrum here in San Miguel de Allende. Along with the hotels, the ante in San Miguel de Allende was upped on hospitality about 10 years ago, so it’s growing. 

 

When it comes to restaurants, you can’t really compare San Miguel de Allende to anywhere else. It’s different in its own way. There are a lot of fun places to eat here in San Miguel de Allende, and my wife and I like to go out. We’ve got a little kid, so usually we go to food places for kids and finger food places, but when we get a chance to have a date, there’s always a nice place for us to not just have a good meal, but also have a nice ambiance, and where we can get away from work and from parenthood for a few hours. I like that very much. I would say that San Miguel de Allende had a naïve charm that no longer exists.
