Can I buy furniture in San Miguel de Allende?

Yes, you can buy furniture in San Miguel de Allende and you have plenty of options. We have furniture stores that sell modern furniture-- Namuh, Evos & Liverpool are 3 that come to mind. All are pricey options, but cheaper than having furniture shipped here. There is also rustic, hand-carved, Mexican style furniture for sale at the flea market by artisan carpenters. Another option is to purchase antiques both from consignment shops and estate sales. Finally, some people hire...

The artisans here in San Miguel de Allende are amazing. You can take a picture of something you want and give it to somebody, whether it is a metal worker or a furniture maker or a tile maker. You can have something recreated very inexpensively and very quickly if you can’t find what you are looking for.

The upholstered furniture in Mexico is not very comfortable. However, I have friends that are in the interior design business that work for individuals and they have tradesmen that manufacture the furniture for them. They get it manufactured to spec. Part of the problem with it is that the pitch, the backs are straight up. You want a slight incline for your chairs and that is something that hasn’t been figured out yet here. But if you could have somebody make it for you that is not a problem and it is very reasonable.
Custom-made furniture here in San Miguel is reasonably priced. They are less expensive compared to custom-made furniture in the US. There are a number of stores where you can buy furniture here, too. Yes, you can buy pre-made furniture in San Miguel. You just have to know where to look and if you can’t find something that you want because you want something specific, you could just have it made.
I had an 8-foot dining room table made that was extra wide like a country French table with a specific base that I was looking for. I also had it white washed so that it looked country French. I paid US $320 for it to be made to my specifications and it took 8 days to make. The same table would have cost me about $1,500 in the US. The artisans here in San Miguel are really great craftsmen. You just have to tell them what you want done. They can do anything and it is astounding.

You can buy good furniture in San Miguel de Allende if you go to Liverpool (a shopping mall on the outskirts of San Miguel de Allende). If you want to buy antique furniture, you can buy it in San Miguel de Allende, but if you want to buy comfortable furniture, the only place I know where to get it is the department store where the stuff they sell is very often made in America.

I recently got a good deal on some La-Z-Boy chairs we purchased at Liverpool. These La-Z-Boy chairs were already on half sale, but when we asked about this color, the people at Liverpool said suggested that we look for better deals online, so they hooked us up and we bought our La-Z-Boy chairs for a fourth of the original price. We paid only US $400 apiece for these La-Z-Boy chairs. Each of these would have cost at least US $1000 in the US because they’re mechanical; they go back and forth, and up and down.
You can get good deals on furniture in San Miguel de Allende. It just happened that these La-Z-Boy chairs were there when we were looking for them.
I bought some other chairs from a company called Deco that are comfortable and half-priced. In Mexico, there are standard times when they have sales, so you can usually get furniture and anything else you want on sale if you can wait. These La-Z-Boy chairs happened to be on sale when we wanted them.

There are places here in San Miguel de Allende where you can buy furniture but it is probably better if you go to Queretaro, which is about 45 minutes away from San Miguel, because you have more options there. There is a big shopping center in Queretaro called Antea and they have furniture stores there, too.
In comparison to the US, living there is all about buying and throwing away things so when it comes to shopping for furniture, it’s easier...

In comparison to the US, living there is all about buying and throwing away things so when it comes to shopping for furniture, it’s easier to do it in the US because they have cheap stores where you can go like Marshalls and Ross, Target, etc. where you can find anything you want. We don’t have those kind of stores here in San Miguel. There is Liverpool here in Mexico, which is a big store where you can buy anything that you need but it costs more compared to the malls in the US. We don’t have a Marshalls here in San Miguel so we go to bigger metropolitan cities for shopping.
The furniture that you can buy here in Mexico is similar to what you could buy in the US in places like Target. However, furniture here might be of better quality here because they were made here. You could actually go to a furniture maker and tell him what you want made and he will make it for you. Custom-made furniture here in San Miguel de Allende will cost you about the same amount as store-bought furniture in the US. There is a furniture store here in San Miguel called Namuh where they sell imported items from Indonesia, India, and other countries, so their items are expensive but they are very beautiful.
Personally, I didn’t buy my furniture here in San Miguel. I bought my furniture in Queretaro. You can buy all sorts or decorative items in San Miguel such as nice shelves, tables, flower vases, etc., but for big furniture items like a living room set, I bought that in Queretaro.
