How much does it cost for a gardener in Los Cabos - La Paz, Mexico?

Where I am in La Ventana, about 40 minutes from La Paz and a little more than 2 hours from the Cabo San Lucas area, a gardener costs about US $30 to $50 a month and will come three times a week to tend to the garden.
The cost depends on the size of the property and how much gardening the gardeners have to do. La Ventana is more of a countryside and smaller area. I am sure that there are people who pay $100 a month for a gardener in other places nearby, but that is not the...

Gardeners are very inexpensive here in the Los Cabos – La Paz area. The cost to get one also differs depending on what your facilities are and how much gardening needs to be done. Generally, it costs around US $10 to $25 a week to get a gardener.

A lot of the landscaping here is what’s called xeriscaping, which are local plantings that do not need a lot of water, and there is not a lot of grass. My yard has no grass in it at all. The gardeners come in and rake the sand so it is pretty and I have cactus in the backyard.
Our gardeners are included as part of the HOA. If you are in a complex, more than likely the gardeners are going to be included in the HOA and they just have general gardeners. If you have a single-family home or a standalone house, the cost to get a gardener really just depends on your plantings and what needs to be done. Most yards are not big enough to use a lawnmower so the gardeners just use a weed whacker. The grass here is like a thick bladed grass that you see in Florida.

I am not sure of the cost to get a gardener in Cabo. But in La Paz and La Ventana (a little village 40 miles southeast of La Paz), getting a gardener is not expensive and it would cost around 500 pesos (less than US $30) per day to get a gardener who will work all day.

I can’t really answer what is the cost of a gardener for Los Cabos but for here in the small village of La Ventana, about 40 minutes by car south of La Paz, it depends on if you’re talking about a full time gardener who’s working 6 days a week or you’re talking about a part time guy who comes in a couple of days a week for a few hours.

For example, we have gardening service for our homeowners for which they pay around 900 pesos (less than US $50) a month. But they’re sharing him so that keeps that cost down. If you had to hire that guy for your home on an individual basis, he’s going to charge you more than just to come for a couple of hours. But because we have this guy working, he’s going from house to house, he gets his full 8 hour a day and he gets his pay so the cost is very low for the home owner, and our arrangement here works well.
A lot of people don’t understand that here in Mexico there’s a burden on the employer to pay a lot of different things such as medical, worker comp., retirement, and vacation pay. It’s a lot and you need to know that because if you hire somebody and you don’t have an agreement, if the government finds out, they will fine you and they’ll go for back pay. A lot of people don’t understand that and a lot of people don't pay for these things and get away with it. The government wants that money because that’s what provides the health service and so on.

As a result of all this, it’s a hard to say what does a gardener cost, but as I said above, here’s how we’re doing it. We pay a very good price because we have a community set up in which they share in the cost of his deductions as well. So that keeps overall costs down. But if you’re just going to hire a guy for your house, he might give you a good price like, "‘Oh, give me $100 a month’ or something like that but you have to be aware that there are requirements. The guy can have his own company and then you’re not liable but you have to know those details.

In Baja California skilled manual labor (that which does not require supervision or continued guidance) will cost 500 pesos for a 10 hour day. Tipping is not customary but providing bottled water or a snack is greatly appreciated. Carry the one... I know, it works out to $2.50 per hour which is (at the time of this writing) five times the minimum wage in Mexico.

Become accustomed to Mexican employment law before you begin employing staff on more than an occasional basis. Be fair and they will be grateful and have your back and people will go out of their way to help; take advantage and you will be well known for that by all.
