Is Belize a good place for preppers to have their bugout location? Is Belize a good place for survivalists?

Belize is a good place for preppers; absolutely. Belize is a very sparsely populated country (just a little over 300,000 in the nation as a whole). It’s also English-speaking and based on English Common Law, so this makes it a natural place for Americans and Canadians to bug out. Belize has beautiful rainforest and locations you can go to within 10 or 15 minutes that are in the middle of virgin territory.

There are lots of companies here who can provide you with the abilityto have all your electricity needs run on solar power. There’s also plenty of opportunity for wind power just with the winds coming off the Caribbean Sea. The availability of water is certainly not an issue here. There are homes that have been here for decades that were never hooked up to any water system other than collecting rainfall.
Relative to food, we have an obscene amount of wildlife in the ocean.

I think Belize is a good prepper location because you can be very self-sufficient down here and live off the grid if you want. You can collect water and you can use solar or wind power. I am not saying that you can do that in Ambergris Caye, but can definitely do that in Belize.

Belize is an amazing place for a prepper or a survivalist for several reasons:
- If they are coming from North America and they speak English, it is very easy to immerse yourself into the community immediately.
- We have such easy access to food at all times. Food grows everywhere here in Belize. They grow in the backyards, the parks, etc. We have many plants and trees for which you do not even need a green thumb. You just plant them in the ground and the plant...

- We have such easy access to food at all times. Food grows everywhere here in Belize. They grow in the backyards, the parks, etc. We have many plants and trees for which you do not even need a green thumb. You just plant them in the ground and the plant grows. Sustenance is all around us here in Belize. Especially inland, there is an abundance of rivers, so you always have a water source, and you always have food. Those are the major things for sustenance.
- Many preppers consider the ability to barter ability to be important, in the event they do not have cash on hand. If you are in the Cayo District, for example, and you have cows and you want to get some equipment for your farm, there are things that you can barter with people without necessarily doing it on a cash only basis.
- In Belize, you can absolutely live off the grid, which a lot of preppers are looking for. The reason is because we have a water source. If you want to use it as a source for electric generation, or if you want to have a solar source, we have an abundance of solar here in Belize. Solar is very good in Belize because we have so many days of sun. You don’t get the cold and the gray skies here in Belize. Some people also use wind generation.
- Belize is a good place because the country has nice weather all year round. We do not have freezing cold rains or winters or snow. You do not have to plan for that. You can actually live in Belize completely without air-conditioning; you do not need it. Some people want to air-condition a bedroom or two, but it is not necessary. You do not have to worry that your food source is going to be frozen.

Belize is a good place for preppers to have their bugout home. You could locate it in the middle of the rainforest, where anyone would be hard-pressed to find it.

Here is a specific example. They recently discovered an old Mayan town that was sitting very close to another town that was occupied by people, yet nobody knew the old Mayan town was there, even though it was less than seven miles from one of the big towns in the north. The scientists inspected the topography of the area, went over to investigate, and sure enough, there were walls right under the earth. They started excavating and found one of the largest towns of the Mayan empire, that was clearly just a stone’s throw away from where people live now; and no one knew it was there. If you needed to hide from something, the jungle would be a good place to get lost.
Belize is all rainforest, so you can dig and you will find food. And the soil is very good for growing produce. Rain falls significantly throughout the country for most of the year. The north gets less rainwater than the south. Rainwater collection is one of the big ways people gather water, in addition to their own wells. You can definitely have your own well on your property, which would work well.

Belize is very anti anything that would hurt the environment. You would not find radioactive stuff in the ground. It is very easy to set up a reverse osmosis and purify water. You can definitely live off the grid. My father is testament to this. His house is completely solar powered. They have a well and they have cisterns to catch rainwater.
The Belizean people as a whole are very poor in a lot of places in Belize, so they live off the land, which includes killing animals and using them for sustenance. I don’t think they have anything that requires a hunting permit here, other than what is already covered within the gun laws here. You could certainly raise animals like chickens and goats. I know there are lots of places that have cows and horses.

It doesn’t get better for preppers or survivalists than it does in Belize; there are lots of animals here, lots of trees in the dense rainforest and lots of waterways. There are also “water vines,” which are vines found in the jungle that you can just cut open and water drips out of it that you can drink.

You could easily live off the wildlife here in Belize. That is what my grandparents did for most of their lives. It is also very easy to grow a garden on the mainland.
You can easily set up a bugout location and defend your territory here. Belize has 8,867 square miles with a population of 351,600 and a population density of 13.6 per square kilometer, so we are very sparsely populated. To give you a better idea, Belize is slightly larger than the state of Massachusetts, while Massachusetts has more than 18 times the population of Belize.

Belize is certainly a good place for preppers because no one is going to bomb Belize, I shouldn’t think. Belize is pretty far down the list. We have been to at least two places that have these containers underground with their survival stuff but that is two in the entire country that I have seen and they are both Americans.

Everything is here in the Cayo district. We have clean rivers. There is no pollution in Cayo because there is no industry here. Nothing is made in Belize so there is no pollution and the rivers here are clean. It would be very easy to get more than enough water because it rains enough and there are rivers. There are also fish in the rivers and you could grow your own food pretty easily. Belize is a clean country.
The Cayo district is beautiful and especially well-suited to preppers. You can grow your own food here while you cannot do that in Ambergris Caye or Placencia. There are fruit trees everywhere in Cayo. There are coconuts, bananas growing wild. If you have to, you can eat a monkey or two and the locals even eat iguanas.
There is not gardening in the cayes. However, they do have fish.

There are areas in Belize where survivalists gravitate. Relatively large tracks of land are available for not a very high price in relatively remote areas where there are no superhighways that will take you there. For preppers, these are good tracks of land.
I know several survivalists. They have a hydroponic garden, and their own setup. They have wind turbines, they have solar, and they are very happy doing exactly what they are doing and feeling...

Belize can be a good place for survivalists because there is a lot of fertile land. You can easily be self-sufficient. There is always enough rain here and there are lots of streams from where you could get water also. There is no industrial pollution in Belize because there is no industry, not even close.
I guess you could defend yourself here but Belize has very strict weapon laws. You cannot just buy a gun. You need to have a good reason before you get a gun license....

The government is also very strict when it comes to unlicensed weapons and ammunition. If you are caught with it, you will definitely end up in jail.
The average sun radiation is pretty high, comparable with Florida. With a medium sized solar power system, you are able to live off the grid without any problem. Most people have a backup generator because in the rainy season it could be overcast for a week. Your battery bank will most likely not support you for a week and so you will have to charge your batteries every once in a while with the generator. Usually, this is not an issue. If you decide to live off grid, you will have to adapt your lifestyle to a certain degree. If you run a walk-in fridge and freezer, you cannot support this with a standard solar power system. On the other hand there are examples of people who invested enough in solar to live without any power restrictions.

Belize is probably a good place for preppers or survivalists. There are a number of very rural areas where you can certainly go and get lost. However, if you’re looking for anonymity you won’t find that in the villages in the communities because pretty soon everybody’s going to know you’re there. That said, there is a lot of undeveloped countryside out in Belize and you can still buy large tracks of land at very reasonable prices.

In my situation, we’ve got a solar system that is purchased in Belize. There are a number of solar companies; more every time I turn around because buying electricity from the municipal power system is relatively expensive. The municipal power is kind of expensive, so people opt for solar even if they don’t have to have it, even if they have access to municipal power.
So as far as water goes, there’s a lot of water is potable but throughout the country it is very loaded with total dissolved solids, so you’re going to need some kind of filtration if you’re going to use a well. Rainwater catchment is your other option and usually there’s plenty of rain.
Regarding food, you can absolutely survive on what you could pick. There are coconuts everywhere. There’s papaya, mango, bananas; any kind of fruit you can think of and there’s a pretty good locally grown produce. There’s a large community of Mennonites in the country that the British brought initially to help establish more of a commercial and agricultural system and they produced chickens for eggs. There’s plenty of food and a lot of Belizeans are basically subsistence farmers here. That’s how they survive.
