Can I wear jewelry in Belize and feel safe?

Relative to wearing jewelry and feeling safe, my philosophy is that you should not really be flaunting your affluence. It does not serve you well down here in Belize when people live so close to the edge and the discrepancy between the “haves” and “have nots” is so great, why would you walk around with Coach bags and tennis bracelets and high heel Jimmy Choo's? It does not make any sense and it does not have any purpose here in Belize. However,...

Going to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye and the areas where there are lots of tourists and expats, yes, you can wear your jewelry. We recommend wearing jewelry during the day and in well-lit areas. In crowded areas it's safer. Don't go into dark alleys either wearing your jewelry or being alone. It is relatively safe during the day having jewelry on while staying in the safe zones, I would say.
I personally don't have any problem wearing my jewelry. I wear jewelry, for example, on weekends, and going to the grocery store. It is no problem during the day. I wouldn't wear any heavy jewelry and go into south side of Belize City.

We always advise people who will go to the southern part of Belize City not to make it too attractive for thieves to see that you are easy prey. When you walk downtown, it’s just easy for them to grab jewelry or snatch it from your hand or your neck. It happens if they need some quick bucks and see you as easy big prey. So we advise people not go to the south side of Belize City wearing lots of jewelry.
I do, however, wear jewelry because I know everybody here so it is easy for me to do. But for tourists, I would advise them not to wear jewelry. And there is no reason for tourists or expats to go to the south side of Belize City, anyway.

In Corozal, I do wear jewelry, carry my phone, ride my car, go shopping, and I still feel safe. I can even leave my car open and not worry about it. There are some places in Belize where you couldn’t do that, but within Corozal, it is very safe.
