What's the food and cuisine like in Belize?

Belizean food and cuisine is unique, in that it’s a combination of Spanish, African, Caribbean, and Mexican cuisines.

Belizean food and cuisine is simply amazing. You will get to savor dishes from all the different cultures.
What is most popular is their rice and beans or coconut rice with stewed chicken and potato salad, but every culture has their own specialties. The Garifuna culture has some awesome dishes that use seafood such as their Sere (fish cooked in a coconut milk) or Boil Up (boiled ground food with pigtail and fish). The Garifuna culture has some awesome dishes that use seafood such as their Sere (fish cooked in a coconut milk) or Boil Up (boiled ground food with pigtail and fish). The Spanish culture is known for their delicious tamales (corn cooked in plantain leaves and chicken) and relleno (chicken stuffed with ground meat cooked with spices and eggs).
There are so many awesome restaurants as well that cook excellent dishes in all areas of Belize which also specialize in certain cultures. In Belize City you can find Sumathi, which specializes in East Indian food, and Milky Way, which has a Thai menu. Vegan places are becoming very popular. You can head over to BTL Park (Belize Telemedia Limited, a major park in Belize City) where you will find Vegan Bites and your local food stalls as well. But the best thing about Belizean cuisine is that most of the ingredients are organic. Pictured at the top is garlic conch with curry potatoes and steamed cauliflower.

Beware the uninitiated. Don't confuse Belize Rice and Beans with Belize Beans and Rice! The "rice and beans" concoction is cooked together, usually in coconut milk. Beans and rice are both cooked and served separately.
We love to cook at our Belize Eco Village and feature innovative Belize recipes in our monthly newsletter "The Howler". Bite into our Belize recipes.

We love to cook at our Belize Eco Village and feature innovative Belize recipes in our monthly newsletter "The Howler". Bite into our Belize recipes.
Some of the knock-your-socks-off Belize recipes we've featured are:
- Rum PoPo. This Belize Christmas holidays' favourite is laced with Travellers' 5-Barrel Rum. Rum PoPo is a step or two up from your traditional holiday eggnog. It's not a drink for the faint-hearted. The name is probably derived from the fact that you end up on your "PoPo" after knocking back a couple of glasses! Bottoms up!!
- Piping hot Pizza (featured to the right).
Vegetarian Chili. We add a hit of Belize Belikin beer to this Belize chili recipe. For those with truly intrepid taste buds, we suggest a dash of Marie Sharp's "Beware Comatose Heat Level" hot sauce. We do include a warning that “If you'd rather not burn a hole in your Granny's best tablecloth, substitute with Marie's original Habanero Pepper Sauce.” Garnish with a dollop of yogurt from Western Dairies and strips of fresh cilantro. Delish! (Featured to the left).
- Thirst-bursting cocktails like Watermelon-Strawberry Lemonade, chock full of electrolytes!
- Hot and tasty Painted Stone Cakes.
- Refreshing Dragon Fruit-Watermelon Sorbet (featured to the right).
- "Berry Tasty" Clafoutis.
- Scrumptious Spinach, Sweet Potato and Chickpea Stew.
- Mouth-watering Mango-Chevre Tarts (baked to honour "Toggy", our first baby goat, whose Mama comes from the famous Toggenburg breed of dairy goats). We make our own goat's cheese (chevre). No kidding!
So, while Belize beans and rice and rice-and-beans are tasty, our Belize Eco Village offers a dash of the truly exotic.

This little jewel of the Caribbean isn't that small when it comes to cuisine. Belize's menu is a wonderful combination of Mexican, American, African, Mayan, Spanish, Indian, Chinese and Creole dishes.
"Belizean Rice and Beans" is the signature plate of the country. Fresh coconut milk is the secret to the great taste of this traditional dish. Rice and beans is accompanied with stewed chicken, potato salad and fried plantains.

But this is not all that this country has to offer. Pizza, salads, fresh bread, soups and much much more. Fresh vegetables and fruits make it easy for you to make anything and everything you crave, from main dishes to deserts and tasty natural drinks. There is a lot for you to try and explore when it comes to Belize.
