Are gays, lesbians and others in the LGBT community accepted in Belize?

Belize is very different from the US, where gay couples can legally marry in some states. In Belize, homosexuality is illegal. However, there are some small LGBT communities in Belize, but their presence is kept unremarkable in order to avoid any discomfort.

From my understanding, the LGBT community is accepted in Belize. Apparently there is a large LGBT community here in Ambergris Caye. I do not see them having any specific parties or anything just geared for themselves, but I do not think anything is exclusive. Everything is rather Inclusive down here. I know that Belize is heavily targeting the tourist market for gays and lesbians.

From what I gather, there is no real homophobia down here. It is not like in Jamaica where gays and lesbians have been told not to go because they will be beaten to death. In Jamaica, they are just very hostile and homophobic, while here in Belize, the attitude towards gays and lesbians is not nearly the same. In Belize, problems do not exist like that.

Generally speaking, I do not think the LGBT community is accepted here in Belize. There is a LGBT community that exists here in Belize and they are very close knit, but they are not yet open, comfortable, and accepted throughout the county of Belize. They are not at that level yet.
I think it is a cultural thing because not a lot of Belizeans are exposed to the LGBT like expats are. Belizeans are a bit narrow-minded in that regard. If Belizeans...

I think it is a cultural thing because not a lot of Belizeans are exposed to the LGBT like expats are. Belizeans are a bit narrow-minded in that regard. If Belizeans would understand that being lesbian or gay is a lifestyle that some people want to practice, it would not be an issue. Being gay or lesbian is some people’s lifestyle, but they also feel threatened by it for some reason.
The LGBT here in Belize do not get violent reactions, but if Belizeans see a man dressed like a woman, for example, they would usually say a comment about that person. People do not just let that pass without saying anything.

As far as the lesbian, gay, and transgender community, there are many people here in Belize that I know of that are lesbian or gay and they are openly so. Their communities accept them for who they are, but the difference is that not everyone in Belize accepts them.
The same is true with many places in the world. The key is to come to see where you are thinking about moving. See if it’s a fit for you and meet some of the people who are the same...

A gentleman named Caleb has been strongly working on with attorney Lisa Shoman, who used to be our US ambassador. She was our Minister of Foreign Affairs and State, and she was our US ambassador in Washington D.C. for the country of Belize. She is an amazing and terrific women. They are actually fighting for strong gay rights here in Belize. So the things as they are now, could very well shift into a positive framework that says everyone is allowed to be who they are.

The LGBT community is accepted in Belize. In fact, the government is working on a law that allows same-sex marriage.
There are lots of gays and lesbians here and the society accepts them. Personally, I don’t mind if a person is gay or lesbian. I respect them just the same as everybody else. Just like in the US, the LGBT community is widely accepted in Belize. Belize in general, is just like the US. We just imitate the Americans.
