How bad are the mosquitoes and other bugs and insects in Volcan and Cerro Punta, Chiriqui Province, Panama?

I have rarely seen mosquitoes in the Volcán - Cerro Punta area, the Tierras Altas, and the very few I have seen were not particularly insistent on dining on my blood. The only really noisome insect are flies, which propagate exponentially when farmers nearby put manure as fertilizer into their fields.

One sees many benign and interesting insects when tramping in the wilderness, and sometimes in the home. I am especially intrigued by the butterflies and moths, of many species, in dramatic plumage. I took photos of a member of the world´s biggest species of moth, when it decided to take a siesta on the living room floor.
While they are not insects, many people think of spiders as insects, so let me mention that there are many species of spider. Most are benign; all have important niches in the ecology, consuming flies and other less desirable insects. Some are venomous, the most famous being the beautiful and extremely intelligent tarantula - though these are very rare to see, since they avoid human beings.

Before we didn´t have mosquitoes because of the "cold" weather but now we do. We have tarantulas, worms, chinches, a large variety of ants, grasshoppers and others. But there’s nothing to worry about, because they don’t attack you. Also you can always fumigate, both inside and outside the house, after which you don't see them at all.
I personally recommend Truly Nolen for pest control and extermination services. They charge...

I personally recommend Truly Nolen for pest control and extermination services. They charge approximately US $55 to come to Volcan and Cerro Punta.

Mosquitoes are almost non-existent here in Volcán. We have a pond and a river on our property and I can’t remember ever seeing a mosquito here. That’s not to say that Volcán is bug-free. There are bugs in Volcán- every place in the world has bugs. What’s cool though is that you see tarantulas and scorpions here in Volcán.

During the entire the time my family and I have lived in Volcán, we’ve only seen one non-poisonous snake, and no mosquitoes. You get bit by what the locals call “no-see-ums” from time to time. I’ve been here so long that it really doesn’t bother me anymore. We sleep with our windows open, and we’ve had no problem of bugs flying in.
Other parts of Panama are pretty well-known to have a lot of insects, but here in Volcán, we typically eat our dinners outside just because the nights are so gorgeous, and we never get bothered by insects. I’ve been sitting here eating breakfast and enjoying a cup of coffee this morning, and I have not seen the first bug buzzing around my breakfast. There’s just not too many bugs here in Volcán. They exist but they’re not overwhelming.
In comparison, Central Kentucky has a lot of bugs. We didn’t have our windows open much there, and we had to use HVAC system quite often whether it was for heat, for air, or for cooling.
Here in Volcán, where the temperature is steady every day of the year, we don’t have any way to cool our air except by opening our windows, which we do most of the day. And then for the cooler evenings, like if it gets down to 55 Fahrenheit at night, that’s perfect and we don’t even worry about bugs. If it gets cooler at night, like down to 46 Fahrenheit, we burn a fire in the fireplace. It’s just perfect.
