What's the cost to rent an apartment in Volcan and Cerro Punta, Chiriqui Province, Panama?

When I first arrived in the village of Paso Ancho, in the Volcán area of Panama, my casita (small house) ran $300 a month in rent, plus a negligible amount for electricity and gas. That is not atypical for a one-bedroom rental. But, if you look and ask around, you can find some nice places for very little - I know of another casita, with three bedrooms, that rents for $350 a month. The best deals don't advertise on the internet: a rule of thumb is, if it's advertised to gringos...

The best deals don't advertise on the internet: a rule of thumb is, if it's advertised to gringos on the internet, the price is going to be considerably higher. I've seen casitas about the same as the one I rented, available for $1,000 a month and even more. Granted, they're very nice, but for a lot of people that is more than they need pay. The best deals are found by asking local people. Go to see them; don't take someone's word for what they are like. Talk pleasantly to potential landlords, and, if they like you, the rental price is not unlikely going to drop.

There are not many apartments in the Volcan area of Chiriqui Province, Panama; there are more houses than apartments. The cost of renting the relatively small quantity of apartments we have varies depending on if you want it furnished or unfurnished. Furnished apartments rent for approximately between $300 to $500 per month.

In the Volcan area for example, I have an apartment with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, living and dinning room, kitchen, totally furnished listed for $450 per month, including all utilities. In Cuesta de Piedra (15 minutes from Volcan; in a very pretty area) I have another with the same description at $60 per night, and the owners will negotiate this price when it's a long term rental.
In Cerro Punta it is very hard to find an apartment to rent. You can, however, find a cabin, house or duplex.
Hope this info. helps.

The cost to rent an apartment in Volcán is much the same as if you’re going to buy a house: there is a dichotomy between Panamanian-style and American-style apartments. A newer, American-style apartment will rent for between $800 and $1,000 a month, while small Panamanian-style apartments which are usually a casita on someone’s property can be rented for $500 - $700 a month.

There is a project right up the main drive in Volcán that are apartment buildings behind a gated community. There are first level and second level options, and the units are usually 1-bedroom studios or 2-bedroom with 2 bathrooms, a living room, a laundry area, and a dining area that cost about $800 a month.
