The history of Volcan and Cerro Punta is very interesting. Many years ago Volcan was known as El Hato de Volcan. "Hato" in Spanish means "large amount of cattle", so this means that Volcan was like a very big cattle ranch. After the First World War and the Second World War a lot of people from Switzerland, Yugoslavia, Poland and Italy came to the area looking for a better future. Most were Swiss and Yugoslavian people who decided to stay in Cerro Punta because of the weather. It was very cold here in those years, which was part of what these immigrants were looking for.
You can see the construction of very pretty European-style houses built mainly in Cerro Punta, and there are some in Volcan, too. Very old people say that they remember seeing the ´´lion´´ coming from the mountain to eat cattle. What they call a ´´lion´´ was actually a puma.
Even when I was little I remember that we had hail every year and also I remember the ´´lion´´, too. The town was so little that we knew every car that passed by. This was early ´80s.
There is a lot of history to say about our area.. This is just a very brief synopsis. I you're intersted in more don´t hesitate on asking. It will be a pleasure to give more info. about it.
Regards,
Tehany
