How's the hiking and camping in and around the Panama City, Panama area of San Francisco?

Unfortunately, with so many mountains and hills, rivers and beautiful country places, Panamá still doesn´t have the custom of "camping". Our idea of camping is a group of students on vacations on a 2 or 3 week field trip.

Hiking is a great idea, specially in our dry season, from December to April. Just name the place, and you´ll have a nice place to camp, like Campana (in the District of Capira). That´s an excellent choice for hiking. Spectacular view... At the bottom of the mountain, there is a super nice river...where you can swim and enjoy.
And you have towns surrounded Campana, like Chicá, Altos de María, Capira, Chorrera and Chame and Coronado, that can supply your needs for groceries and medical care, all located about 40 minutes from Panamá City.
Another place is the "Parque de la Soberanía" (close to Albrook, located about 15 minutes..without traffic..from the center of the city), where you can take guided tours. It takes about 3 hours to walk it all.
But any place you chose, you will be more than pleased for our peaceful, quiet and warm people.

You cannot go hiking or camping in San Francisco, because it is in the middle of Panama City, but you can camp on beaches like Playa Serena, Coronado, which is about one hour and 20 minutes from Panama City, or in El Valle, which will take you two hours by car from Panama City.
Regarding safety, you want to make sure that you have other campers around you as there might be people who try to rob you at the beaches, but my two picks, Playa Serena and El...

Basically, you can pitch your tent anywhere on the beach or in the mountains in Panama, as you do not need a permit or anything as long as where you are camping is public property, but you can of course not camp on private property anywhere in Panama without the permission of the owner.
