Some might argue that the main tradition of the Republic of Panama is the Carnaval celebration, but even then the Carnaval celebrated in the capital pales in comparison with its counterparts from the countryside. When you think of traditions, you think of the "interior". Only in the provinces such as Los Santos, Herrera, Veragua and Coclé will you find Panamanians wearing Panama hats. The famous Panama hats were never manufactured in Panama, but in Ecuador. Panama was just the main point of distribution. They are still being sold in Ecuador as "Panama Hats" and the best brand is Montecristi. The best ones can be rolled up and pass through a wedding ring and some are so tightly woven they can hold water. The typical straw hats handmade in the interior are more affordable. Country folks routinely wear them. In my view, the country's most interesting tradition is the feast of Corpus Christi, held in La Villa de Los Santos (Province of Los Santos, Peninsula of Azuero) around June of each year. The dirty devils "Diablicos Sucios" seize control of the town and end up dancing in the amazing colonial church.
