The drinking water in San Francisco, Panama City, Panama is just as safe in this neighborhood as it is in Panama City in general. You could not argue that the water is safer or less safe according to the different neighborhoods. I have been living in this neighborhood for the last six years and I can assure you the water is safe to drink, just as it is in Panama City. Generally speaking, the taste of the water is not great. As far as I am concerned, I have purchased in the US a simple under-sink water purification system, including a reverse-osmosis tank. Cheap, convenient and I need to change the filters once a year (the cost is around $80.00). Highly recommended.

Panamá in general and the San Francisco area of the city of Panama specifically has been proud of its water for years and years, with the quality of its water one of the best in the region. Once in a while, a water plant will maintenance, and there may be a few difficulties for a few hours, but normally that´s not the case.

Some foreigners buy bottled water for personal reasons, but generally, residents and visitors drink the tap water. Many restaurants and homes have filters or water systems like I do, for even better quality, but that´s a personal and not necessary for safety.
The tap water, except in a very isolated mountain regions where water has not been properly processed, is totally safe to drink.
The supermarkets everywhere carry many brands of bottled water, if you feel like buying it.

The water in Panama is safe to drink. The city water company IDAAN sends out daily news about the water system on their website. www.idaan.gob.pa
There have been a few times when it was a necessity to buy bottled water. I recommend you keep a few 10 gallon buckets of water in storage to use when the water is turned off for extended periods of time.

In the year and a half I was living in San Francisco, Panama City I believe the water was turned off 4-5 times.

It is safe to drink water in San Francisco and in most parts of Panama City. I said “most,” because there are times when the water is not safe to drink and it can depend on the season. I think it was last year when the water coming from the mountains got contaminated because it was raining so much that they were not able to completely purify the water before it got to the distribution plants, so for several days, people had to buy water to drink and cook with. If there is a problem with the water, the government will let the public know about it. You will not be surprised. There were several times last year when they cut the water supply during the weekends because sewage treatment plant was being built. Whenever they have to cut the water supply, they will let the public now two or three days in advance.
There are some towns in the interior where it is not safe to drink the water, such as Bocas Del Toro and some areas of Chiriqui.

Yes, I would say that the water is safe to drink in all areas of Panama City, including San Francisco, which is an area of Panama City. There are only a few places in Panama that you cannot drink the water from the tap, because there are some places that are less developed, but in the big cities and in other developed places, the water is really, really good. I drink water from the tap in all places in Panama City, as well as in Coronado, and I never get sick.
