Even though this is, by US standards, a very low cost of living, in general, the prices in Pedasi are slightly higher than they are in the nearby larger towns such as Las Tables or Chitre for two reasons:
- Pedasi is more of a tourist area, and growing.
- The markets in Las Tables or Chitre are larger, with more variety and the markets there have more competition.
You can live well in Pedasi for US $1,500 / month.

A family of two would spend probably $400 per month on groceries in Pedasi.
If you’re going to run your air conditioning every day, your electricity bill will be substantially higher than if you don’t. I believe that when we had the two-bedroom home here in Pedasi and we ran the air conditioning only at night, our electricity bill was between $100 - $110 per month.
The price for water is minimal. The highest bill we ever got for water was $20 per month and that was when we were watering the grass a lot in the dry season.
If you have a house and have to pay a garbage fee, it would be around $20 per year (not per month, but per year).
In Pedasi a couple could definitely live like you live in the States for under $2,000 per month, and this would be living pretty good.
If you really wanted to be on a budget, you could probably rent a casita in town for under $500 per month, but it would have no air conditioning, very minimal amenities, no hot water; that type of thing. You could live like they say you can online at under $1,000 per month, but only if you live without those luxuries.

Relative to the cost for electricity, I can tell you from personal experience that I pay just 25% of the electricity bill I paid in Panama City, because 1) I use less electricity for air conditioning in Pedasi, because it is less humid; and, 2) you pay less per unit in Pedasi than in Panama City. In Panama City, for my 102 square meter (1,100 square foot) apartment, I paid US $280 per month. In Pedasi, my bill is from $80 - $100, tops.

You can choose to live near the ocean, in the town or in the mountains. The main town is about 10 minutes away from the ocean, while the mountains are about 20 minutes away.
The cost to rent a 200 square meter house (about 2,150 square feet) with three bedrooms and two bathrooms would be US $900 per month or more if it is located near the ocean. If you rent a house this size in town, it would be around $400 to $600 per month, and between $300 and $400 per month if it is located in the mountains. An apartment in the town will cost about $300 per month.
With regard to food, you can always go to a restaurant and have a pretty nice meal for $10 for two people.
To give you an idea of how the prices are for food here in Pedasi, a dozen eggs is $1.90, a loaf of bread is $1.50, which could be higher or lower depending on whether it is white bread or brown bread. Milk is about $1.60 per liter, and chicken breast is $1.25 per pound. Drinking water is $1 for half a liter.
The cost of electricity in Pedasi mainly depends on one’s lifestyle. Most houses have their own electric meter so the amount that you pay for electricity depends on your consumption. For example, if you have air conditioning, a refrigerator and a washing machine and you use the air conditioning only at night you would pay about $25 to $30 per month for electricity for a small house.
Water, on the other hand, is cheap. We don’t have meters to measure water consumption. We pay a set rate of about $3-$5 per month.
