How much does food cost in Pedasi Panama? I've noticed that food prices at the grocery stores in Panama get more expensive the further you move away from Panama city; maybe because it costs more to get it there. Anything American is more expensive, like cereal and name brand items, but buying fruit and veggies off the veggie truck is very inexpensive.

Eating at local Panamanian restaurants or fondas is usually the cheapest way to go. Try the $3 Comida del Dia (meal of the day offered at most local places) it can't be beat! However in Pedasi, there are a few restaurants that cater to tourists and Americans etc. and you will find that their prices are close to the prices in US or Canada (Burger $7 to $8 | Pizza $12 to $18).
Also, I paid about $6 for 3 bags full of veggies from the veggie truck but paid over $5 for a six pack of Club Soda at the local grocery store. I say learn to eat the local Panamanian food and you'll save a ton!
Here is a list of a few prices in Pedasi:
Loaf of Bread $2.25
Eggs: $2.10
Milk: $1.50 liter
Beer six pack: $4.00
Coke or ginger-ale: $1.25 1 Liter
Box of cereal: $5.89
Rice: $1.25
Can of beans: $1.59
Can of Club Soda $.89-$1.00

Food in Pedasi is less expensive than in Panama City. The produce in Pedasi is fresher than Panama City, as well.

In order to compare the prices for food in different places, I have something that is called the "Pasta Salad Rule", which is how much it would cost me to make pasta salad somewhere. To make my pasta salad I use pasta, tuna, mayo, eggs, onion and pepper. Here in Pedasi, you can buy the ingredients to make pasta salad for US $3.50. In Panama City, it's going to be almost the same, between $3.50 to $4. In Costa Rica, all ingredients cost me $8 the last time I made pasta salad. In the United States, ingredients for pasta salad costs between $4 to $5.
Here are some other prices for food in Pedasi:
- A dozen eggs is $1.65.
- A bottle of beer is 40 cents.
- Dekel owns a bakery. We make really nice home baked bread. In Panama, you sell the bread by the pound, which is a little bit more than a loaf. In Pedasi, one pound of white bread will cost approximately $1.20.
Pedasi is a fishing town. You can get really cheap and fresh fish. It's difficult to buy it from the actual stores because fishermen basically control the businesses. They usually sell their freshly caught fish for $2 to $3 a pound.
I get pasta, Coca-Cola, oil and eggs at the supermarket. I usually buy produce from delivery carts that go around town, which serve all the restaurants as well as the regular people, who also buy from the carts when the carts stop in the street. It’s nice. They sell onions, pepper, and fruits, which are all really fresh, and much cheaper than if you buy them in the supermarket.
