The cost of food in the Marbella area of Panama City, Panama ranges from an average of $7 and up. Since Marbella is located in the heart of the city you may find a variety of restaurants, some focused on pedestrians or people who work nearby. However you may also find elegant restaurants with an expensive menu. So, basically, you may find a restaurant for each occasion.

You also have fresh fruit stands scattered along the street, and supermarkets close at hand, as well as a couple of specialty food stores too. Plenty of choice.

Panamá has always been considered "the Bridge of the Americas," which is good reason to find fine food all over town. Restaurants can be found in every corner of the city. They represent almost every aspect of international cuisine, from Thai to Creole. Soups are very attractive to locals, and is a main part of their daily meals. There is one place, though, that is getting more and more exposure every day-- Casco Viejo, with very picturesque cafés and restaurants with a wide variety of prices. (Casco Viejo is very close to Marbella, in the city of Panamá.)
But you cannot only find "food" in restaurants. One of the great things about Panamá is that you can find fresh fruits and vegetables everywhere. You can even plant them in your backyard, and take your harvest from your yard right to your own table. Also very popular are the "fruit shakes" that the locals call "liquados" or "batidos" (made with milk or ice cream). Excellent for a warm day.
As for Marbella (also known as the "banking area"), it is a small neighborhood in the city of Panamá, with a situation the same as described above.
It´s impossible to give a certain price for "food," because you can be talking of millions of products, but, in general, the price for food in Marbella is certainly much lower than it is in other countries. This is one of the reasons why thousands of foreigners are seeking Panamá for their relocation or retirement. And, if you are a resident retiree, you enjoy a good discount, not only in restaurants, but for movies, transportation, airline tickets and other items. If you are a visitor, you can enjoy a 30 day free courtesy medical insurance. Just ask for your brochure at the airport.
Here's an example of some food prices at markets:
- A large papaya (one of the most common fruits here) is US $2 to $3
- A beautiful and juicy pineapple can go from $0.30 to $2
- A butter avocado can be found from $0.50 to $2.00
At restaurants, a really good chicken sandwich can easily cost $3 to $6. A complete meal at moderate to better than moderate restaurants could cost from $7 to $14. If you go to a high end restaurant or hotel, the prices vary, but are certainly very competitive, especially if you compare the prices to what you will pay in Europe or Japan.
And, of course, if you go to a very, very high end restaurant, you may find meals in the hundred of dollars, as well.
Another example are all you can eat, very high quality brunches at 5 star hotels, which cost around $15.
[Editor’s note: According to a press release August 1, 2014, the Panama Authority of Tourism stated that no charge tourist insurance coverage is no longer being offered.]
