What are the expats like in the Panama City, Panama suburb of Fort Clayton / Clayton?
Carlos Garcia de Paredes, MD - Hospital Santa Fe
There are may expats from the U.S. and Canada living in Fort Clayton. Prior to 2008, many retirees from the U.S. sold their homes at good prices and moved to Panama, where they were able to by a decent home and live very comfortably on their retirement income. Also quite a few younger Americans moved to Panama.
In addition to the Americans and Canadians, we have a large number of Venezuelans who are moving to Panama to seek a safer place for them...

In addition to the Americans and Canadians, we have a large number of Venezuelans who are moving to Panama to seek a safer place for them and their children, and they are also making many investments all over Panama.
Generally speaking most expats living in Panama are middle class professionals. Many live in Panama during the winter months and return to the U.S. for the warm weather season.

The majority of the people in Clayton are expats from all over the world. Most of them are there working, so it is not so much a retirement expat community. Most people who are in Clayton are either working for the American embassy or at the NGOs at the City of Knowledge so the expat community there tend to be young, small families. (Kite Festival at the City of Knowledge, pictured.) There are a few retirement groups there, but not as many.

There are a lot of expats in Clayton. Most of them are Americans and they are all nice people. Everybody gets along in Clayton. They also have a pretty tight community over there. There is a lot of community identity amongst expats; they know each other and they help each other out.
A group of universities and organizations called The City of Knowledge or Ciudad del Saber is in Clayton. There are a lot of North American university campuses...
