Where are the best beaches in and around Coronado, Panama?

Asking the question, "are there beaches in Coronado, Panama?" is like asking is there sun in Panama. The answer is absolutely, "YES!" The beaches in Coronado, Panama are some of the finest in the country. White, powdery sand rimming pristine aqua-blue water make this area a great place for wading, swimming and beach combing. During certain times of the year the area is even known for surfing. Because Playa Coronado is a gated community you will find the beaches are not as crowded as some of the other beaches that are of a more public nature. Just be sure to bring your hat and sun screen because you will want to spend so much time on the beach you can easily get a sunburn. 

 

Coronado has more than 3 km of  beaches. Coronado is a Private Urbanization, which means that you have to be a resident or be staying at the hotel to be able to go to the beach. There is a Beach Club in Bahia Serena where you can relax under some shade and just order "Piña Coladas."

Coronado Panama has a nice beach but you will find many beaches in the nearby areas such as San Carlos and Punta Chame. Some are better for swimming than others as there are strong rip tides on some. Punta Chame is a very long beach and mostly without too many people. White sand and well worth visiting.

For some reason I never liked the beaches in the specific Coronado area. The beaches in front of Coronado have dark, almost black sand. For me, the best beaches that you could find in the Coronado area are in between Buenaventura, Playa Blanca, El Palmar, Rio Mar, Malibu in Gorgona and Punta Chame.

For me, the best beaches that you could find in the Coronado area are in between Buenaventura, Playa Blanca, El Palmar, Rio Mar, Malibu in Gorgona and Punta Chame.
 
In general, people do not like the beaches in El Palmar a lot because there are a lot of rocks on one corner. They don’t like it during low tide but people like that during high tide because then you can go surfing at that corner. El Palmar has been popular for many years because it is one of the best surfing spots in this area. Talk to anybody in Panama and mention El Palmar, and immediately they will think about surfing. The best places to go surfing around Coronado is in El Palmar, Rio Mar, and Malibu in Gorgona. People who go surfing in these areas always make sure of other people’s safety. If you have a family or if you are going swimming with your kids in El Palmar, Rio Mar, or in Malibu, they make sure that you are not disturbed. High tide is usually very early in the morning at around 4 AM to 6 AM and sometimes after lunch, but surfers do not like surfing in the afternoon because it’s too hot. I used to go surfing and I do it very early in the morning. When it’s high tide in El Palmar the waves are strong but during low tide, they’re not strong at all.
 
The more popular family beaches are Santa Clara and Playa Blanca. You would see lots of people walking or working out on the beach in Coronado and in Punta Barco, which is next door to Coronado. Vista Mar used to be a nice beach but now there’s a company that decided to build a marina there so the people can no longer enjoy the beach because of the construction. The construction of the marina in Vista Mar now blocked the beaches where you can walk and that’s another complaint being raised by the people there.

We try not to let too many people know, but the very best beach on the Pacific side of Panama is in Santa Clara (mile marker 133 km from Panama City - between Sea Cliff and Rio Hato) - miles of the nicest sand (mostly white with some black sand, indicating a rougher surf area), fairly calm waves, it is very wide (especially during low tide) and clean beach, usually almost deserted during the week (busy on holidays or Sundays after 11 AM).

We power walk from Sheraton Bijou 7 km west to Las Verenarus restaurant on the beach - walk across two shallow rivers - admire the multi-million dollar mansions overlooking the ocean. If you come, bring away your garbage please.
