How's the surf and surfing in and around Coronado, Panama?
The surf in Coronado is best at Playa Serena when there is a major south or southwest swell. Playa Serena is the only surf break within Coronado. It is a long, right hand point break mostly for beginners.
However, very close to Coronado are a wide range of breaks that receive more exposure and bigger surf. Places like Gorgona, Punta Barco and Playa Teta.

Coronado beaches are not ideal for surfing generally, but very close to this town there are other places with decent waves, specially from May to September (it is important to check tides report first).
These beaches are: Teta, Palmar, Rio Mar and Malibu, all within 15 to 20 minutes drive from Coronado.
Chame is another nearby beach famous for windsurfing.

Coronado is not the #1 top place for surfing in Panama. However:
- It has very good waves during the entire year.
- There are two or three tides a year higher than 17.5 feet that can make for very good days for surfing.
- The regular waves will depend a lot of the winds you can get in summer and the moon's phase.

My husband and I met while surfing in California, so surfing is very important to us. We used to have a business before we lived in Panama that brought people from North American down to Costa Rica to go on surfing and to yoga retreats.

The surf around the Coronado, Panama area is very good. Certain times of the year, it is better than at other times, but overall, you can average getting great swells at a minimum of once a month, up to once a week.
The surf breaks in Coronado vary widely from very fast beach breaks with tube rides to point breaks where you can have a wave that lasts literally for over a minute, to gentle rolling waves that are perfect to teach beginners and kids.
The winter months are not as good for surfing. The months that are very good for surfing are April through July, where you pretty much have swells weekly. The other times of the year, you may get a swell about once a month. January through March the winds are favorable, but the swells don't occur as often.
(For those of you who are not surfers, when swells come in, there will be waves for one to four days, depending on how big the swell is.)

If you live in any of the areas of Panama City, Panama, and you want to go surfing as close as possible, you can go to Playa Serena, which is the main beach in Coronado, Panama. Coronado is about 90 minutes west of Panama City by car.

The surfing in and around Coronado is good when the weather conditions are right, and you can check the surfing forecast on the Internet for that. The waves are not too high; the highest ones I have seen there were maybe six feet, but it all depends on the weather.
If you want more constant surfing conditions, you can go to Playa Venao, which is located next to Pedasi in the Azuero Peninsula, about two hours from Coronado by car.
