Our cleaning lady cleans our apartment once each week on Tuesdays and she is a veritable cleaning machine. She cleans non stop for about 5 hours and we pay her $28 - which equates to about $5 per hour plus a few bucks for a round trip taxi ride from her place to ours. Most expats do not have live-in maids because it is just not part of our culture. I don’t have much information on live-in housekeepers because that is not part of our market. Most expats do not want someone else living at their property. It is just not customary for expats, whereas for the locals, it is.

If you pay $30 a day, you’re going to get the very high end of the pay scale, but you’re going to have somebody who does absolutely everything, from washing your windows to cooking your lunch and dinner, taking your dogs out, doing the laundry, etc.

We live in Coronado, Panama and we have had our maid for almost three years and we are thrilled with her. She charged $17 a day (9 to 3:30) when we first started with her but we now pay her $25 a day. She not only cleans the house, but does our laundry, changes the sheets, and arranges for the exterminator or hedge trimmers when my Spanish is insufficient. We have her come when we have larger groups.
