Latin Americans have a dress code, and Panamá is not the exception.  In Coronado,  usually people are in bathing suits, shorts or casual clothing if they are around the beach.  But if you go to a restaurant in the area or a little bit more formal get together, especially if Panamanians are invited, not all of them will have beach clothing.  Sometimes they are doing business, or there is some other reason.

As a personal example, my husband is Panamanian, but he’s lived in North America for 20 years.  Still, he’s very specific as to what he’ll wear depending on where he’s going and who he’ll be with.  He won’t go out of the house to meet other Panamanians unless he’s dressed according to the Panamanian style: nice slacks, a collared shirt, shined shoes, etc.  But if he knows that he’s meeting only expats, he’ll wear sandals.

Foreigners are easily recognizable because their clothing usually gives them away. They wear very, very light clothing: flip-flops, summer/ floral prints, shorts and tank tops. The ladies often vary their shorts with a maxi skirt. It is understood why the foreigners dress light, because they are not as used to the heat as Panamanians are.
 
The beach chic style is also used in the area of ​​Coronado, Panama. The gentlemen wear guayabera and linen or cotton shirts, plain colors, Bermuda shorts and loafers. The ladies usually wear kaftans, sleeveless dresses and maxis.
 
The items you cannot miss in your wardrobe in Coronado, whether you are male or female, is a pair of good sunglasses and a stylish Panama hat!

I have five pairs of flip flops, and now, I just hate to put on regular shoes anymore! On a regular day, I usually wear tropical long pants, a short-sleeved shirt, and flip-flops. If you are a woman and you need to go to a government office, you cannot wear a sleeveless blouse. Other than that, you can dress casually almost anywhere, even to high-end restaurants. There are some places in Panama City where men wear suits and ties; I do not even own a tie now. I used to own a lot of ties, but I don’t have ties anymore. If you are going to a formal event, instead of wearing a tie, you can wear a Guayabera shirt.

There are so many fun 'sun' dresses available that it is fun! Dresses are also typically cooler and more comfortable than pants or shorts. When going into a restaurant though, it is often advisable to carry a shawl, as sometimes the air conditioning can be very cold!

All the restaurants in the area, even the more exclusive restaurants, will let you in if you wear shorts and a collared shirt or for ladies, shorts and a blouse. The only dress code that is enforced is in Panama City. When you go to government offices, women can’t show their knees or shoulders and men wouldn’t be able to wear shorts.

 

If you are in Panama City, they wear suits when they go to work, but at the beach, most people are retirees. Some are working professionals, but it is a laid back life. If you want to dress up in Coronado, you can also do so. In fact, I am pretty much dressed up all the time. At night, when people go out to happy hours, women wear nice sun dresses and men wear khakis or linen pants. It just depends on your style but it is an open dress code. Girls wear skirts without heels and they look really nice, but it is not a requirement.

It is such a nice mix of cultures out at the beaches that pretty anything that you wear is accepted, whereas in Panama City, you wouldn’t go out in shorts. There is so much American influence now in Panama that shorts and flip flops are accepted everywhere. There are so many backpackers here and there are so many foreigners and we dress for comfort, whereas the Latin culture dresses more for style, so they have gotten used to our comfortable dress code and have accepted it. Pretty much everything is welcome.

 

Americans have influenced Panamanians so much that you will now see Panamanians wearing jeans and shorts. For example you would sometimes see my partner Jose in the office wearing shorts, which was unheard of for a Panamanian man. You will now see Panamanians wearing more casual clothing.

There are getting to be more and more places that are like that. If you wanted to be very casual, you can. If you wanted to dress up, you can do that, too. Coronado is a very accepting place. Whatever you want to do, it’s going to be okay.
 
A lot of times I do lump Coronado and Panama City together because they are like the peanut butter and jelly. They do go together. 
 
In Panama City, you can wear your diamonds and sequins any night of the week, along with your six-inch stiletto heels. You can get as dressed up as you want and you will fit right in.
 
In Coronado, you can be as casual as you want or you can also get dressed up. There are going to places for both. There are going to be occasions when there are galas at the country club, when there’s a nice dinner with your friends, when there are different events going on when it’s going to be appropriate to put on your cocktail dress, high heels, and jewelry. There are also going to be times when you’ll feel very comfortable spending the entire day in your tennis skirt and your tank top.
