In the 8 years I have lived in Coronado, Panama, I have no complaints about the electricity. In the earlier years, there were a couple of blackouts of a few hours, but now, with all the new condos and upgraded service that came with them, there are no incidences of blackouts.
On a related subject, I survived the two blackouts in New York City, and so I am a veteran of grid instability. I’m glad to say, such events are not about to happen in Panama, least of all, in...

On a related subject, I survived the two blackouts in New York City, and so I am a veteran of grid instability. I’m glad to say, such events are not about to happen in Panama, least of all, in Coronado. Every home, condo and house has cable TV and Internet (wireless also), in the lobby areas and social areas usually, as well.

It’s important to have surge protectors in Panama, because when the power comes back on after being off, it may surge or spike, which can damage unprotected appliances, your computer, TV, etc. For this reason, I recommend that, if you live in Panama, you invest in surge protectors for your major appliances.

At present 70% of the power generated in Panama comes from hydroelectric plants, which rely on water. The power supply problems occur throughout the country, including in the Coronado area.
When there is an energy crisis, the government takes measures to save energy. These measures are announced by all the media and must be obeyed under penalty of fines.
In extreme cases, when a drought extends over a long period of time, the government takes more extreme measures such as scheduled power cuts. This measure consists of cutting the power supply by sectors during specific hours. These cuts are also previously announced.
Generally, however, the power supply is usually constant, but in recent years we have been experiencing longer summers and periods of drought unseen before.

Most people do not have generators here. Most of them just wait for the power to come back on. It’s not that big of a deal.
