The majority of Coronado residents are not expats.  Panamanians, from the city, have long been the residents of Coronado, the first beach community with the Coronado Resort, Golf and Beach Club, in existence for over 60 years. This gives Coronado an edge as the haven for the more prosperous of Panama, with a history and sense of privilege that goes with it.

Panamenos are connected to Americans by history and commerce and so enjoy the presence of Americans, who they think of as neighbors and friends.  This is particularly so with the business and professional sector of Panama, who have often been educated in the States and have relatives living there. There is a bond also with Spanish and South American residents of Coronado, where speaking Spanish is a social asset.  However, all these residents speak fluent English, and are happy to converse with Americans, who often do not speak Spanish.

 

Coronado, Panama is a mixed community, and, because of its easy access to the city and convenient amenities, two beaches, and the Coronado Resort and Equestrian center, is likely to stay that way. I do not think that most Americans coming here are looking for other Americans exclusively, but enjoy the 'mixture' as part of the Panama experience.

The citizens of Panamá and the United States are a traditional and very friendly "combo".

 

Locals don't treat foreigners any differently than they treat other Panamanians.  Panamanians are very warm and friendly people, and as long as you follow the law and demonstrate respect, Panamanians are very happy to interact with whatever neighbor of theirs wants to live a precious life in Panamá.

I want to make clear that customer service in Panama is very poor.  I’m sorry to tell you this, but I have to be honest.  We, the Panamanians, do not have a culture of service. But this does not diminish our quality as human beings, our warmth in treating others, and everyone’s idiosyncrasies.
 
I assure you that most of you will find and have very good relationships and friendships here.

Local Panamanians treat expats in Coronado wonderfully. I have lived here longer than most expats in the area. I have been in Panama for 9 years and in Coronado, 7 years and I have never felt any kind of resentment from anybody, just a lot of kindness, and a lot of help. Panamanians are very nice people.

A lot of expats live in Coronado so it is quite normal to see an expat anywhere there. Panamanians like Americans because they help by giving some jobs to the locals. Americans almost always need someone to do their gardens or clean their houses.

Expats are treated fairly here in Coronado, Panama. I think the longer you live here, the more you get to know the locals and they accept you more. I've been treated very fairly by everybody. I started this company here and I had to deal with a lot of bureaucracy. I've been treated very well. It was far easier to get this development going here in Panama than anywhere else I tried In the United Kingdom or in the United States.

I started this company here and I had to deal with a lot of bureaucracy. I've been treated very well. It was far easier to get this development going here in Panama than anywhere else I tried In the United Kingdom or in the United States. 
 
There is no resentment towards expats here in Coronado. As an example, after eight years here, my wife still speaks no Spanish.  If you go shopping with her, you will see the guys at the meat counter in the local supermarket just have a ball with her because she’s just pointing to things. They enjoyed my wife walking into their store because it's different for them. They have fun and my wife doesn’t feel uncomfortable.
 
My son spoke fluent Spanish within 24 months and he loves it here now. I often ask him if he would like to go back anywhere and he says “no” because he loves it here.  In actual fact he is just about to get married to a lawyer in the city (Panama City) here and they're expecting their first baby. So everything’s working out really well. My son is now 28. We moved here when he was 19 years old.
