How's the adventure travel and activities in and around the Panama City, Panama area of Casco Viejo?

Within Casco Viejo there isn't a lot of adventure travel. You can, however, rent bikes, stroll through the historical town and relax!
You will need to travel out of Casco Viejo for adventure travel. There is mountain biking, dirt biking, rock climbing, etc., all out of town. For example, Nitro City is well known for their extreme sports, and is located approximately 1 1/2 hours from Casco Viejo by car.

There are road bike clubs around, and more sports clubs within Panama City, but Casco Viejo isn't really known for these types of activities. Casco Viejo is more known for cafes, restaurants, bars and the old buildings.

Gamboa is about a 45-minute drive from Casco Viejo. Gamboa is very famous. They even have an excellent hotel there, but they also have a place where you can do bird watching (which is very big in Panama), or you can take a boat to see the vegetation. You can also see the monkeys in the jungle in Gamboa. (The picture just to the right and above is a view from the Gamboa Resort.)
Darien is our version of a state or what we call a province, which is close to Colombia. The closest part of Darien is about a two-hour drive from Casco Viejo. In Darien you have a several of the different groups of native Indians. You’ll also see the thicker jungle and you can see how the Indians live. The Darien has recently become more touristic, so you can see the Indians do their dances and you can sometimes spend the night there. The adventurous people would go to Darien.
You can drive about two hours from Casco Viejo to the closest part of San Blas that adjoins Darien, park your car, and then they can take you by boat to the San Blas Islands, which is very popular. The Kuna Indians live on San Blas in in an area similar to an Indian Reserve in the States. The Kunas are the ones that make the molas, which is the traditional dress of the Kuna women. The San Blas Islands are spectacular. The water is crystal clear, and you experience a deep blue, curving sea, bright sun, and palm trees. People like the San Blas Islands a lot because it’s very back to nature, very calm, and they love the water and to go lobster fishing.
You can also fly into one of the San Blas Islands.
