Some numbers? sure: $100 electricity, $16 water (monthly bills). Grocery shopping? depends on you. There are online services that would bring shopping to you, even organic farms. Calculate about $250 to $300 a month for a couple. I barely use my car, so gas isn´t even in my budget. If you are renting an apartment, probably you will be spending anywhere between $800 to $1,800 for a one bedroom (big range!!) to $2,000 - $4,000 for two bedrooms and beyond. I guess this part needs a whole explanation, probably at some real estate question! I guess those are the basics. In Casco you can go as far or as low as you make it. The great thing about it is that you don´t need much to have a great time on regular basis, there is always something fun happening, whether an art festival, a concert in town, dance, you name it. Again, living here is very different from most places in Panama, it is a true community.

If you “play low key” and want more bargains, you could live off on $1,200 - $1,300 a month in Casco. You can find bargains in Casco Antiguo; it just depends on your lifestyle. However, Americans tend to want to buy goods and services where everything looks neat and sparkling clean, and they’re not too keen on living next door to a low-income person of a different culture and nationality. This would tend to eliminate the ability to live at the less expensive end of the cost of living.
Relative to restaurants in Casco Viejo / Casco Antiguo, you can get a meal for $5 for yourself, up to over $100 and above for two, if you drink wine, have cocktails, eat steak, lobster, etc.; it depends on what you fancy. Casco Viejo has evolved and is bringing in people with very good incomes and people who can afford to dine at these higher end restaurants. In addition, you have the high-income population of Panama that is going to Casco Antiguo a lot because there are now lots of very good restaurants and of all kinds of Italian and other international cuisine.
We have apartments in Casco Antiguo starting at $365 per month, but they’re not in the key sites. The prices for apartments here in Casco Antiguo are similar to the wide variety of rental prices per month in places like New York City, for example. However, a good, average 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment would rent for roughly $1,500 per month.
Although we have had lower prices in the past, as of this moment, we don’t have anything for sale in Casco Viejo for less than $450,000.
