How much does food cost in the Panama City, Panama area of Casco Viejo?
Patrizia Pinzon - Arco Properties
Cost of food in Casco Viejo is the same as anywhere else in Panama City, Panama. It all depends on what you are looking for! Good resources: the Fish Market. Great spot for fresh fish, as in any fish market around the world... go early! Also: the fruit/vegetable market. They have great stuff and is located basically steps away from the Fish Market. So if you want to go local, those are good places (don´t buy meat there, though!).

If you are like me into not using your car or using it only for ultra necessary things, then you will find that there are online services that bring the food to you. Riba Smith has an online page where you can do your grocery shopping online and boom! directly to your door. Many don´t know this. Also, there is a service called New Earth Panama that does exactly the same, but with organic products, so you are helping farms in the countryside of Panama, which is cool. The guy running it is super responsible, I`ve had great experiences with them, and you can see their Facebook page also on the work they do with the farms in Ocú, for example.
If you run out of the basics and are into organic beauty, Super Gourmet is at A Avenue corner with 6th. They carry organic cacao and beauty products, which are my favorites. Nice wine, and the basics for a party, so that if you ran out of time... they`ll help you out!
So from low end to high end you are covered. It is very much about your choices. I`ve spent around $50 in vegetables with New Earth and fed my small family of two for two weeks. With Riba Smith, your cost will probably be around $300 for a month of feeding two people (adding meat, cheese and all of that).
Happy Shopping!

There is not a proper supermarket in Casco Viejo. You do, however, find some bodegas that are located at different spots, so you can get your basic necessities met.
You can find liquids and basic food in Casco Viejo proper, but you will likely not find fresh meat and vegetables. For those, you have to have a car or take a taxi to an adjacent neighborhood to do your grocery shopping. That is one of the drawbacks of living in Casco Viejo.

If you have your own car, it would take about 15 to 20 minutes from Casco Viejo to get to a place to buy food, such as the neighborhood called Albrook, where there is a 24-hour supermarket called El Rey, with similar products as a supermarket that you’d find in the United States. El Rey typically caters to the middle and middle upper class as well as to the expat community, so you will find a lot more imported and American goods. (El Rey Supermercardo, pictured.)
Normally, you will be able to buy your produce on the side of the road in Panama, but not so much in Casco Viejo. In Casco Viejo, you will have to go a proper supermarket. You can probably find potatoes, carrots and onions in a bodega. A bodega is pretty-well stocked store, a mom-and-pop type of shop. They sell mostly beer, soda and basic stuff like dry pasta, snacks and small goods. They have them all over in New York. It is similar to a convenience store.
