What's the food like in the markets in the Panama City, Panama area of Casco Viejo?
John Happel
The food in the markets in the Casco Viejo area are wonderful. In addition, there are many different restaurants and vendors throughout Panama City, Panama, it really depends on your taste.

Casco Viejo is a charming old place in Panama City, Panama, reminding visitors of towns of the 15th century. There is a law of conservation, and the area is a Humanity Patrimony (UNESCO World Heritage Site). There are no supermarkets in town, only little fresh fruit places, where you can get an excellent and refreshing fruit shake of any flavor, while you are walking. But, in contrast, you find many places in which to eat, from a small café to fancy restaurants.
Always bring your hat and comfortable shoes, and be ready to buy water as the heat sometimes could be intense.
When you return to other neighborhoods in Panamá City, you can find all kinds of modern supermarkets, with the most fresh vegetables and fruits, as well as local and imported goods. The most well known are El Rey, Super 99 and Riba Smith, all situated in different parts of the city.

When the people of Casco Viejo want to go grocery shopping, they generally get in their car and go to the closest supermarket, Riba Smith. This particular Riba Smith carries a lot of American and European products. It’s clean, air conditioned, with fresh meat, fresh fish, etc., more like a traditional supermarket. Barring traffic, the Riba Smith supermarket is about a 10-minute drive from Casco Viejo.
