How are Americans in the Panama City, Panama area of Casco Viejo treated? How are expats in the Panama City, Panama area of Casco Viejo treated generally?

Casco Viejo (also known as Casco Antiguo) Panama, a borough of Panama City, has a large expat community. While the official language of Panama is Spanish, the majority of Panamanian people speak good English.
Panamanian people are also known for being friendly, hospitable and welcoming towards new arrivals.
Casco Antiguo is relatively safe. It is common that a good-sized police presence makes regular checks...

Casco Viejo, a district in Panama City, Panama, has resident ex-pats from Europe, North America and South America...which we call "neighbors." We have lived here almost 7 years and have always been treated well by our Panamanian neighbors of all income levels AND we make an effort to treat them well, e.g. greeting them, bonding over our pets, sharing baked goods and our "catch" from Lake Gatun, acknowledging holidays and family events--both happy and...

We know and regularly engage with more people here than we did in any of our U.S. locales; this is truly a neighborhood. If you like living in a true community, you may enjoy Casco Viejo.

(Casco Viejo and Casco Antiguo are different names for the same place.)
Americans and other expats are treated very well in Casco Viejo. In the past, there was some friction because the Americans who lived in Panama in the Canal Zone tended to have their own enclaves that they seldom went out of and did not mix with others. The Canal Zone no longer exists like this and this is no longer the case.

There is a growing expat community and tourist activity in Casco Viejo. The locals look very favorably on expats and tourists. I can’t say that I’ve heard of a case of anything ever happening that wasn't positive.

I’ve never seen a difference between how Americans or other expats are treated in Casco Viejo and how others are treated. The expats here are just treated like people. It has never been unfavorable. Everybody here has a friend who is American, is related to one, or is married to one.
