Can I wear jewelry in the Panama City, Panama area of Casco Viejo and feel safe?

Absolutely! I do it myself all the time: rings, bracelets, necklaces. I`m not big on earrings, they give me allergies. Casco Viejo, a district in Panama City, Panama, has some of the best restaurants and theaters in town. Most people dress up a little bit for gala nights at the theater. I`m constantly surprised by the level of dressing up that goes sometimes around. You will notice though, that most people in Casco are more artistic and bohemian soul like. You will see a lot of...

You will see a lot of creative jewelry, not so much gold and bling shiny. This is a place that calls for hand made craft. Have fun! I`ve seen everything from necklaces made out of recycled plastic (gorgeous) to glass and even buttons.

Here at the Hotel we tell our visitors that it is safe 24 hours a day from 1st street to 10th street. We give you a map and point out where to stay away from. We also point out the places you should not miss.

The answers already here are absolutely correct. You can wear jewelry without worrying on the very safe streets of Casco Viejo. The population are very used to wealthy or well-off foreigners and Panamanians living, working, and visiting the area, so the risk of mugging or theft is low. This relaxed attitude plus the high level of police presence (the Presidential Palace is located here) deter virtually all petty criminals.

Panamá City has become more and more a cosmopolitan area. And in such areas, the same as in New York, Paris or Hong Kong, a traveler must be aware that caution is a virtue.
Panamá has one of lowest crime rates in the area, and Panamanian ladies are very much aware of make-up, dress codes and good jewelry, and they wear them everywhere they go, including in the Casco Viejo area of Panama City. Panamanians, in general,...

Panamanians, in general, have an active social life, so wearing jewelry is a general practice every day.
Unless you are ostentatious with heavy jewelry or showing off money at all times, you can walk safely in Casco Viejo. Casco Viejo has the presidential guard, as well as a tourism guard ready to help and guide you, everywhere you want to go. The rest of Panama City is protected by the general police force, but in general, if you stay out of "red zones" you will highly enjoy your trip to Panama. And in general, the good hotels are all in a very safe areas.

I do not recommend wearing a lot of jewelry even in a place as safe as Casco Viejo because you shouldn’t be flashy since there are still some people who could have bad intentions. Some of the abandoned buildings in Casco Viejo are still being occupied by squatters and they have not been evacuated. Most of these people are gang members.
The government has been trying to evict these people from the buildings but they cannot do it. It is very difficult since these are gangs....

The government has been trying to evict these people from the buildings but they cannot do it. It is very difficult since these are gangs. Some of these people are the ones who commit thefts in Casco Viejo such as pick-pocketing. So I do not recommend being too confident wearing jewelry or using your cellphone or iPads while in Casco Viejo since here are areas of Casco Viejo that are more protected than others.
Casco Viejo is just like any other place in the world. You cannot be too confident. Personally, I do not wear my wedding ring when I am in Casco Viejo. Anywhere in the world, there are these areas that you just have to be aware of.
When you are in Casco Viejo, it is better to wear sports shoes since you would be walking and the streets here are made of bricks so it would be difficult to walk on high heels. Casco Viejo is an old quarter of Panama so the streets are very small and the sidewalks are not very even. The less fancy you dress up, the better.
