What are the outdoor activities in and around Boquete, Panama?

I love horses and they do have horse rentals in Boquete. Trails up into the mountains offer a degree of excitement and some awesome views. Along the way you will see birds, squirrels, maybe a monkey. You will see the Indians in their brightly colored dresses, wearing only flip flop shoes climbing the steep trails with little effort. Beautiful butterflies and the occasional wasp buzz by as you progress to the top of the trail. Coffee farms dot the landscape as well as the...

River rafting, mountain climbing, hiking, coffee plantation tours, biking and my favorite: walking! There are bird watcher tours. Herbs and medicinal plant tours, and buss trips to Baru. The extinct volcano is the highest point in all of Panama.
Golf and tree treks, zip lines and baseball or soccer are enjoyed as well.
The Boquete Flower festival is an outdoor event in January. Tuesday the market is place to visit. Just across the bridge from downtown is an open air place for commercial booths.
There are fairs and equestrian events, parades and folk festivals. The biggest tourist draw is the Boquete Jazz festival in late February, also and outdoor event.
The beauty all around is just too inviting to stay indoors!

For the more active oriented person, rafting and kayaking are popular day trip adventures. Most of these trips are organized through local tour operators and the rafting areas are an hour or two away from the town center.
For the truly fit, a hike up to the top of Volcan Baru is one of the “must do” trips in the area. Rising over 11,000 feet, on a clear morning you can enjoy the sunrise while viewing the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea from the same vantage point. Although you don’t have to be a mountaineer to make the journey, it is a long trail and the top of the mountain can be very cold and windy. There’s also a local company that offers a tours to the top of Baru by truck but it is a long and bone-jarring trip.
For the less adventurous person, we also have a well-known zip line tour that allows people of various fitness levels the thrill of seeing the forest canopy without a lot a physical effort.
We also have more traditional outdoor activities like golfing with one 9-hole executive course near downtown Boquete and an 18-hole championship course located around 20-minutes from the downtown area. There are also a few outdoor tennis courts in various areas.
If you prefer your outdoor activities to involve the beach and ocean, world class sport fishing, diving and snorkeling are only about 1 1/2 hours drive from Boquete.
For a lot of expats in the area, the most enjoyable outdoor activity is sitting on their patio with a steaming cup of Boquete’s famous coffee while enjoying the lush, tropical forest scenery that has lured people here from around the world.

I think the best outdoor activities in Boquete are the expat hikes. There are probably three or four hiking groups that go out every week and they choose trails from easy-beginner to tough.
The next best outdoor activity would be golfing. We have two golf courses in Boquete. There are golf courses in Panama City and on the beaches, too.
Boquete is also a nice place for bird watching. We have groups of bird watchers who go out every week to...

Boquete is also a nice place for bird watching. We have groups of bird watchers who go out every week to different areas of Boquete and they catalogue different species of birds.

Right now that I am pregnant, I don’t do a lot of outdoor activities. But a lot of people here in Boquete love to go rafting. People go to the Caldera River here in Boquete. People also love to go coffee-tasting. Most retirees who come to Boquete for the first time love to do coffee-tasting. The younger people however, prefer to go backpacking. They stay in cheap hostels and then go to the hot springs in the Caldera River or to the Los Cangilones de Gualaca in Chiriquí. Los Cangilones de Gualaca is a river that cuts through huge rocks so it is like a natural swimming pool with very clear waters. It is best to go to the rivers during summer but it’s dangerous to go to the rivers during winter. It is not recommended to go to the rivers or even the beaches in Panama during the rainy season because we can have what is called cabeza de agua, which is a very huge amount of rushing water from heavy rains coming from the rivers that carries debris such as logs and rocks with it.
There is also hiking here in Boquete and there are companies that offer hiking tours here in Boquete. They will take you to the most beautiful views in Boquete where you will see the Volcan Baru, which is the highest peak here in Panama. You can also go to Quetzales, which is a trail between Cerro Punta and Boquete.
There are plenty of outdoor activities that you can do here in Boquete and your choices would only depend on your interests and your age.
